I think some folks would just rather that someone told them that they are wrong, and then explain why, without all the smart-assing. That's the impression I get. If someone is hung up on a bullshit technique, what better way to convince them otherwise? Is it better for them to get all defensive and ignore good advice, and then spread the crap to other newbies and other sites? Roel's first post in this thread is the sort of response that should be emulated more often.
At the same time, brand-newbies should really refrain from smart-assing themselves, and stop being so goddamn sensitive. I think Boray got a little too sensitive, but then everyone piled on. It's pretty rude when people do that. It's sort of an "I'm cool cuz I called somebody stupid" effect. (I thought the whole cool, detached, hate-everything postmodern angst thing was on the way out...)
