How to Mix Vocals With AND Without Drums

Hi,

I have a track which is just acoustic guitar and vocals for first half, then drums and full band come in half way through. When the drums come in the vocals get a bit lost, they are a bit quiet. Is it normal practice to turn up the vocals when drums come in or should they be left the same volume all the way through? Cheers

There are no rules per se. If you need to bring the vocals up, bring them up. You could also look at it like you're not really turning them up, as opposed to you're bringing them down until the drums come in. :D
 
I agree with RAMI, there are no rules but it is up to you to decide what sounds good for a track. If you feel like the vocals are overshadowing the drums then turn them until they sound the way you want it.
 
You also need to look on the song as a whole - do you want the first part to be that much softer (lower volume) than the part with the drums?
 
Build a second mix but this time with the full band first. Get that to be what's good for that part of your vision.
Now you have the two perspectives clearer, and a few new views as to which or how they might be morphed ‘.
