how to go cassette to CDR ?

Where can I learn how to transfer what's on a cassette tape to my computer, and then burn it to CDR (after doing some editing like inserting track markers and adjusting levels) ??
I might be able to play around with and figure out the rest, but the first step is transferring what's on my cassette to my computer as a wav file or whatever - how do I do this ? What software would I need, and can I get it free anywhere ?

The answer to your first question is: right here.

Generally speaking, there are a few simple steps to do what you want. Connect the output of tape deck to the line in on the sound card of the computer, probably using RCA cables to a cable with a mini stereo (1/8") plug. Depends on your sound card and tapedeck, so if can't get it connected post the details of your stuff. Record the cassette to a wav file by hitting play on the tape deck and using any of the various shareware .wav editors such as CoolEdit, Goldwave, etc. Try www.cooledit.com and www.goldwave.com. Then edit the file however you wish and burn it to CD. The CD-R software will convert the .wav file to CD audio format for playing on most any CD player.
