How to get this vocal sound?

Nothing mysterious in that vocal track. Great singer, good mic. Then mixed with little or no reverb, compressed to taste.
 
I swear they are both almost identical (well, not quite but you get what I mean
 
The vocal is distorted a little bit. Maybe that's the unusual aspect the OP is wondering about.

Yeah, you're probably right. I remember Harvey Gurst once saying something about adding just a touch of distortion to vocals, barely noticeable, to give them some bite. :cool:
 
Definitely not a dry vocal. There is a slight distortion and a lot of compression.
 
Sounds like it's also EQ'd toward the "telephone" side.

Agreed. That's definitely going on, too. It's really all the normal tricks for making something sound old and somewhat low-quality. Over-compressed, bandpass EQ, slightly distorted.
