I am very new to this but I would like to start doing some recording.

I have a computer, a mini-disc, and a lot of will power. What will I need to get in order to do some recording. I am looking at recording classical music recitals. Basically voice and piano.

Any suggestions where I should start?

1) Do a Search on this BBS.

2) You'll need the following:

a. The best sound card you can afford ($200-$500)

b. The best Mic(s) you can afford SM 57 ($80), NT-1 ($200), Oktava MC012 from The Sound Room ($300), AT 4033 ($350)--get the best cables you can afford

c. The best Mic Preamp/Mixer you can afford (Art, Behringer, Mackie)$80-$400

d. The best monitoring system you can afford (Event, Tannoy, Hafler)$400-$600

e. If you have any money left, you didn't spend enough on the above items.

hold up, you mean recording recitals in a recital hall, right? if so, and you're not planning on taking your computer to the hall, then this is what you need.

look into how the hall reinforces their sound... do they mic or transduce the piano? if so, you're in luck. if they have a nice board and a nice engineer, your in more luck.

Ideally, using the stuff you have, you'd record a stereo track onto your minidisc with all the piano grouped on one side, and a good vocal mix on the other, maybe even dry if you have effects you like.. (some soundman cooperation is necessary here.) (oh, and before you bozos go off about MD compression... chill out.) Then, if you have a halfway decent soundcard, you can dump it onto your computer...edit and mix at will (after getting your mind around which software is best for you) and totally rock out.

Id suggest doing this with the stuff you have (you might buy a CHEAP mic if you need a room mic... akg c1000s) until you get good enough to HEAR the restrictions of your equipment... then, and ONLY THEN buy better equipment.

thanks

thanks for all the info....

I am really looking at doing what you said camn. What is a good program to cut and paste and mix things together? Also since I am using my mini-disc would I use just 1 stereo mic? or should I get an amp and 2 mics?

I would really like to get the recording with piano and voice together. More like you are at the recital. I want it to have a live sound to it.

What do you mean "other side"?
And how do I do that if I only have one mic?

Thanks again for bearing with all my newbie questions....
