...slabs of wood really ...

I would tend to agree -- and as a result the body has negligible effect on tone IMO. I would think that Mex ones would have less quality control in manufacturing than the American ones. If you are able, visit various music stores etc. and play both types until you find one that you like the sound and feel of. I recommend that you go with the white maple neck versions which I think have a superior tone to the rosewood.

And I prefer roswood for the same reason. Use your own ears, not mine ir someone else's.

Has the OP gone to the trouble to demo any guitars?

In the interest of full disclosure, my preference for maple over rosewood is based on playing Strats. My 68 tele was rosewood, and I never played a maple one. The tele was my first name brand guitar, bought because of the low price. I soon sold it in favor of a LP.

No, no, I was referring the the "original poster," not questioning your preference for rosewood fingerboards. I prefer them, too, for playability although I have a maple fretboard on my USA Tele deluxe ash.

My mistake Z -- hit the wrong Quote button. In the future, please make your posts longer so I don't make this mistake again!!!

Fender Anerican Standard Teles are still great guitars. If you get one with a sunburst or otherwise translucent finish, you can be assured it's an ash body, and i would go for a maple neck if you want that snappy, bright, percussive sound. I also prefer the way the edges of the fingerboard feel on one piece maple necks to rosewood necks. Rosewood will also tone down the attack and sound mellower. If you're still not satisfied, get a set of vintage spec or pickups, and pop them in. The craftsmanship on Fenders US guitars is still great. Just make sure you play it before you buy it to ensure you get one that feels good to you.
