How to create a stereo submix

Soundcraft 6000 with patchbay.

I've been reading about stereo submixes and thought I'd do this with toms for an upcoming demo. Didn't give it much thought before trying (thinking it would be easy with the mixer's comprehensive patchbay) but on trying it found myself at a loss.

The desk is 24:16:2.

Strips 1 - 16 have sub-buttons 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, etc., up to 16 (16 busses, yep).

3 toms; they're on strips 3, 4 and 5.

I want to create a stereo mix and send them to channels 20/21 on the HD24, but the first 16 channels are allocated to other sources. I guess I should have thought ahead and used tracks 17-24 and left tracks 9-16 open to be allocated for submixes (due to the nature of the desk).

Is there any way around this? The tom channels have individual outs on the patchbay, but where might I patch in three mono sends to create a stereo mix. Tricky?

I'm probably missing something, but you're doing a bounce-down sub mix to tracks 20/21 on the recorder(?). Can't you just repatch temporarily?

I suppose you could use a pair of aux sends...

Thanks, guys.

Yes, the Aux send theory would work, I suppose - by sending the three individual (tom) signals and controlling their stereo position with the pans on the return strips; I'll try this, although as I speak I can't quite get my mind's eye around it.

The main issue is to have pan control of the three mono signals (which I was taking from channel 3,4 and 5's patch out points.

I'm kind of sleepy, which is when logic goes out of the window. Ultimately, there must be a 'repatch' to enable me to do this. Wow, I really am fried. Will sleep on it and try this in a fresher frame or mind.

Cheers,

slow down a bit....

Doesn't the 6000 have direct outs for each strip?

If so, pan your three toms where you want them and buss them to 1/2, take them out the L/R mix and bring up the buss volume, then all you have to do is patch from the buss outs 1/2 to tracks 20/21 on the recorder

Or are you already using all the buss outs as sends to the recorder?

Sends/Returnd to/from the HD24 are via Elcos from the back of the desk. There are direct outs (effectively) on all channels via LOUT sends on the patchbay.

Anyway, you are absolutely correct of course: pan them, buss them to 1/2, take 'em out of the main mix and bring up sub 1/2 faders. Then patch LOUTs of subs 1/2 to tracks 20/21.

Don't know what the hell I was thiking yesterday. Or more succinctly: I wasn't thinking at all yesterday.

Thankyou very much, guys.

not a problem. I remember collecting my Allen & Heath Saber 24/16/16/2 and spending about 3 days head scratching :)
