How to achieve intro effect to Black Hole Sun

Does anybody have any ideas on how to get the intro effect to Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden? It's the effect about five seconds into the video below. We're looking to pull this off live... is it possible?

I heard they recorded the song with a Leslie speaker, and I know I've gotten a similar effect with my POD using something called "warble." You may be able to approximate it with some sort of basic multi-FX until.

I always thought it sounded like a guitar being played with an Ebow, so that's one thing - without the Leslie, you want Flange/Chorus and Delay/Reverb on that.

Easier to do with a synth with portamento on.

A guitar with an ebow, chorus and delay. (turn up the echo for the end of it).
