ok guys hopefully some experts will come into my studio and help me with recording techniques but i doubt that so can some of you help me...i have a marshall tsl 100 head and a 1960 a 4x12 cab (marshall as well) ive got an american fender strat monster cables (performer 500) 4 akg d 8000s mics's a sm 58 a shure accs 2 and some random radio shack mics and a tascam 414 portastudio and everything sounds horrible and my problem is that 4000 dollars has gotten me bad quality?????? ive been reading some articles on mic placement but i want to get deep info like should i put the mic on a styrophoam box to keep from the bass amp rumbling through my mic. dont tell me to clean my heads or get new fresh tapes cause ive allready done that. where should i put the mic on the upper left speaker upper right bottom left or bottom right? where should i position the mic. i have a yamaha 88s mixer and a samson 4 channel as well should i use these? should the microphone be angled? should i not use the cab and come straigt out of the head through a fx looop out put. if anyone has any ideas please let me know

thanks

take the screen off of one of your SM58's. turn the gain on your amp way down. trust me on this. even if it doesn't sound good live, it will sound good recorded. put one of your SM58's (you took the screen off right?) pointed dead center at one of the speakers. it doesn't matter which one, unless one sounds better than the others. the mic should be about 1cm away from the center of the cone. you ought to get a guitar tone you like. this is my method and i like it a lot.

No kidding, you've invented a new mic...how about we call it the SM57.:) :) :D :p :D

.......................LLLLLOOOOOLLLLLL!!!!!!

i think that was the idea all the way around LOL i need an sm58/57

It is so difficult to tell someone exactly where and how to place what mic to get a 'good' sound. I would start by asking, what is it that I don't like about the sound I am getting? Is it too muddy? Too much high frequency? Sound different through mic than to your ears? How? Too much string noise? Not enough clarity? Sounds good soloed but not good in mix?

All of these things have completely different solutions, and that doesn't take your room, signal chain, playing ability etc.

As a rule, the SM58 (57) up close on one of the cones of the amp and another some distance away for ambience. Center of the cone will give you brighter sound, the edge of the cone will give you more bottom and body. Behind the amp will give you power and low end, straight forward >5' away will give you a natural delay and reverb. But keep experimenting and you will be able to get the sound you are looking for.

Good luck!
