I've been getting more and more into the idea of getting a good DI signal along with the real mic'd amp, and re-amping guitars once the band's gone. Anyone else been doing this routinely?
I do it ALL the time. Seems like the crappier the guitar tone, the more the guitarist is tied to "his tone". Same with drummers and metronomes - the ones that need it the most are most objectionable to it.......
For guitarists, I just wait till they leave and reamp thru a real amp.
I'd always try to get the sound right at source while you're recording it as it means less time faffing later on. However if you do have a crappy guitarist stuck to his tone like NL5 says, there's not harm in taking the DI. On these occations tho I usually just use simulators. Easier to set up, and faster to tweak.
