ok, its humble but here it is,

my recording gear is

fostex x12 4 track
mic is a sure pg 57 for everything cause i cant afford to get more mics right now cause i'm a humble college student,

and i mix down and edit in goldwave audio editor, i love the noise reduction on that program, it makes just about everything sound clean.

i have access to a studio in my college that has just about everything i dream of owning, .. but the above is just my recording set up in my room at home. i just want to be able to have fun and get a fairly decent sound,. can i expect a nice sound with what i have if i try hard enough. i think goldwave is a pretty powerful program capable of some nice eq'ing and etc

I think you'll be able to get sounds onto tape with that setup. It is very basic. Most people don't think much of the PG series mics, so this is probably the weakest link in your setup. We all start somewhere. I made my first recordings with a $10 mic and a dual-cassette boombox. I then stepped-up to a 4-track and a $40 radio shack mic. That was a few years ago. Now it's all digital.

Why are you recording to 4-track rather than directly into your computer? While the analog tape may add that lo-fi warmth, you will likely be able to make much higher quality recordings if you record to your hard drive. That being said, some great albums have been recorded with very minimal equipment. Experience plays a big role in getting a good sound out of whatever equipment you use.

If I were you, I would use this set-up to work out song ideas. Then, take your demos to the studio at school and re-record them.

If you're using the tape, make sure you get the levels nice and hot. Learn about mic placement. You can get good results if you work carefully.

What you are recording?

You tell us. :D How are things sounding to you?

Are you getting a decent enough sound? And are you having fun? Do you feel like your gear is holding you back?

Ive done some pretty good recordings with a similar setup. It may be worth it get a better Mic- An SM57 is a crisp sounding and very versitile Mic to start with and you can get a new one for $90. I have a PG58 too, and i dont like it much. If you are doing multi track recordings of drums, get some more mics and use the 4-track. But if you are just recording one track after another onto the computer, I would just go straight in.

For another good low end solution, Add a small 4-track mixer to your setup (berenger makes one for about $70, but get ready to use that noise reduction you like so much- berenger mixers are a little noisy, but probobly less so than a four track) It will add some good EQ and gain control to your input signal into the computer. It will also provide phantom power if you decide to get a nice condenser Mic in the future.

For an extra $150 bucks, I think your setup could be pretty nice.

PS. I spell berenger wrong
