for an adat xt20 with 197 hrs, and includes an elco to trs snake ($268 new)? just trying to figure out what they are worth...

I personally wouldn't pay anything for an ADAT, I'd avoid them completely.

A few years ago I was in a gear repair shop here in LA and noticed that the door to the back room was open. In side were several stacks of ADAT's, floor to ceiling, all awaiting repair. It just didn't give me a lot of confidence in them to see that many in the shop at one time.

Consider this: I scored a lightly-used HD24 for about $1,100. No way any ADAT is close to 1/3 of the value of that. Looking on eBay, it seems you'd get about $250-300 for the combo.

I will sell you an XT for $75 with an elco snake. I have about 5 lying around. I never really bought the XT20's because the XT's were always fine.

Seems the snakes could be useful for other things..?

Aren't there Elco-Elco adaptors that would have made them TRS-TRS? Come to think of it, I could use something like that for my HD24 to quickly attach my mixer.

That's how I got cheapo disconnects for my live rig FX, insert, and drop snakes. People pretty much give those snakes away these days.

On a number of ocassions I've had ADATs transports freeze up and had to do a quick transfer to 2", in order to save a session. Never cared for them, especially with the excellent hardrives being made today.

Sweet. Got a link to an adaptor?

Except for harddrives ( faster ), tapes breaking etc. on the Adats, do the HD24 sound that much better "sonically" than the XT-20/ XT?

in short, yes, they do sound better. and there is no mantainance. and there is "lock" time between machines.

I didn't buy an adapter, per se. Though I gotta say I didn't look for one, either. Might have saved myself some time. :p

To make a TRS-TRS, I bought two, got a female ELCO connector ($10 plus pins), and replaced one of the males. Since I had to cut the cable anyway, I cut it shorter at the mixer end, so I could tuck the tail into my mixer case after I disconnected.

To make an insert snake, I did the same, and just made one of the TRS ends into send/return splits, like a regular insert cable.

It worked for me, as I didn't mind futzing with the ELCO connectors. Beware, the tools are expensive. "Cheapo" is relative. I got two disconnect snakes for a few hundred dollars and some labor, as opposed to many hundreds of dollars.
