I dont have the money yet but in a few year i would like to build a quality project studio for my band and possible other work. How much should it cost to sound proof a room aobut the size of the average bedroom (with a window to worry about). This includes what i need to keeping noice from getting out and keeping noise(such as drums) from getting out aswell as any acoustic tratment that may be needed.

Sound-proofing is very expensive - it would require room-within-a-room construction - upwards of $10K at the very least....

Sound treatment, OTOH, is much less costly but will do nothing to stop sound leakage in or out of the room....

You could half-ass it for a couple grand....

Build a subfloor, with 2 layers of plywood base flooring with an airspace in between

Bring 2 more layers of Drywall out from your walls and ceiling with resilient channeling in between and proper gaps...

That would help quite a bit... but it won't be soundPROOF..... it will just be a lot quiter than you have now, but still audible..

It will work ok.....but....

Like Bruce said, you really need a room within a room, that sort of floats..

I built a room within a room 15X30 doing all the labor myself. The process that I chose to use included:
Absorbant mat on existing walls and ceiling 1K
Sound Clips into studs and ceiling joists 1,300.00
Hat channel on clips maybe 100.00
absorbant tape on hat channel maybe 150.00 ish.
Homosote screwed only into hat channel on walls and ceiling and resting on cork 1/2" on floor 700.00
Acoustic cault all seams and corners 100.00
Lead tape on all corners and floor 250.00
5/8" sheetrock over homosote 300.00
2 solid core doors from a contractors surplus for 100.00.
Paint, spackle and miscellaneous 200.00
Its a basement studio so I did not treat the floor.
Final cost: about 4K without the acoustic room treatment (of course would have been much more if I hired a contractor)
Hope this helps, you can do more or less than I did depending on how much soundproofing you need.

Hey JimJoe,
That's pretty impressive. What were the results? Any leakage?

Whats the cheapset set up i could do. Basicaly i'd just be looking at recording vocals and acoustic/electric guitar in a spare room. It doesnt have to be perfect, just enough to stop too much outside noice from getting in. How well would using a few large wooden boards and putting some thick foam/blankets as a sort of booth?

Still not sure, because I'm finishing up. there's definately a difference but I have tested it out full blown yet. I still have to seal under and around the doors.
I'll keep you posted.
Jim

Hey man, I'm in the same boat as you with soundproofing and finances. On a funny note, I had a friend that used to throw a sleeping bag and quilts over his head with headphones, and scream into his sm58, so not to disturb his parents. I suppose this could work relatively well if you don't recquire oxygen. I think it's called breath control! lol :D
