About $35 to cut a new nut. Either bone or slip stone would be my recommendation. Bone for tone and slip stone for better tuning. ;)
So, let me see if I got this straight - you're gonna slip him the bone and bust a nut, all while stoned?

Fuck you, asshat. You have no clue what you are talking about. And before anyone accuses me of a personal attack, saying that someone shouldn't pay more than a ridiculously low amount for a repair is the same as calling me a rip-off artist, which is a VERY personal attack in my book.

Doing it right takes about an hour, maybe a little less, maybe a little more. My shop rate is $80 an hour, and that only just barely covers my overhead (rent; insurance - you DO want your guitar insured while it is out of your hands, just in case something should happen, right? - HVAC; etc.) If you want a half-assed job, don't pay more than $50. If you want it done right, go to a good shop and find out what they will quote you. In my shop, it costs about $80, plus $8-10 for the bone blank. I don't know about anyone else's business model, but I couldn't do it for less without screwing over my employees, which I will NEVER do.

You're just a fucking jackass. Faderbug was clearly speaking from personal experience. If you failed to see this, then on top of being an obnoxious prick, you're also not that bright.

And I would like to point out that this is a problem I have had with your posts for quite some time. You are an arrogant asshole, and you owe the man an apology.

BING!!!!

You and watermelon definitely had me LOL on this one! Too funny. But I can't believe you left out the whole "fiddling with his rod" bit...

Thanks for the laugh guys - I really need it, too!
Cheers, Rez

good point rezn8!!

and you never even got the pun light : "50 for a nut job, fiddling with my truss rod"???? get it?

prostitute giving a blow job???????????

know what that means light????????????????

that wouldn't work for you though light.

you're so anal you'd probably cum in your panties while still discussing the price.

light.

First, 32-20, thanks for at least having the balls to sign your neg rep. To the rest of you, fuck off, grow up, and shut the fuck up.

Second, Fader Bug, I do indeed owe you an apology. You lack of grammar caused me to miss the "I" in your post. What I read was, "Never pay more than 50," when you in fact said "I never pay more than 50." They mean two VERY different things, and the first one is unbelievably offensive to me, and I would have defended my statement to my last breath. The second, well, I'm sorry I didn't read it properly. It is completely my fault for not reading more carefully, but do please try to punctuate more precisely. It really does make a difference in how easy things are to read. None the less, I'm sorry.

Oh, and to this guy:

Calm the fuck down you idiot. He was saying trussrod instead of cock. What a dumb fuck I swear. You need to see the light and lighten the fuck up sometimes.Just cause daddy gave you a business to gloat about to everyone doesn't mean you are special.

Trust me, the guitar business is nothing I gloat about, and is nothing to gloat about. Sure it seems glamorous and all, but in reality it is just a job that you work hard and get paid pourly if at all for. That is why I take such umbrage when people start getting all pissy about the price of repair work (which is what I, erroniously, though faderbug was doing). We make NO profit at our repair business, and the only way I make any money is by selling guitars. And I can't make all that many a year, so my earning potential is limited. And to give some perspective to what I THOUGHT was going on, in order to do a nut job for that little, I'd be telling the repair people in my shop to take a $10,000 pay cut every year, at the very least. How would you feel if someone did that to YOU.

At any rate, Sorry `bug.

I`ve changed a nut once :D

I took about 40$ for it. that also included the nut, reading about prices you guys mention.
I can see I`m not charging enough  , I could have been a wealthy man ;) .

But speaking of nuts, have anyone tried NUT-SAUCE (Make jokes here).
I know the name is hillarious, but I tell you my strat has never kept its tuning better, and I do lots of Dive bombs, bendings and sutch.
Great investment for your guitar, specially strats, but it will work with most guitars :)

Guys, it may well be possible to get a nut fitted for less than the ball park figures given here but remember a couple of things.

It takes an experienced repair tech between one and two hours to it properly. How much per hour would you work for once you've paid heat, light tools, etc.

If you get it done cheaper it is usually because they are starting out and have less experience and overhead or they need the work. Neither is a bad thing but it can be a warning to you that things can be less than perfect when finished.

It is possible to fit your own nut but it is not as easy as it may at first seem to get it spot on. The links Canabis gave to Frank Fords site are good and for anyone wanting to have a go they are a good starting point. Have a practice on some junkers before you take the nut off of your fav box tho! And good luck if you do. Ask away if you have any specific questions I'll try and help

Light, well done for apologising man! It takes broad shoulders to stand up and say sorry. I know where your coming from. At least your neg rep was signed by him;) Thats why you give all this qualified advice isn't it, for the positive rep

i owe you an apology too light.
i shouldn't have given you that last remark about the prostitute and the panties.

In college I used to swap out plastic saddles for bone, I think I charged like $20 plus strings :o I did a few nuts, too. Most of my customers were chicks, and secretly I was hoping they would love me in return, but that didn't work out so well :(

It does in my estimation. A lot of people wont/can't/dont....

I thought it took more to say sorry when you weren't in the wrong...
