Any Interest in DIY Monitor plans?

1) What kind do you use now?

2)What are you using for an amp?

3)Is there interest in building your own?



Gathering info for my DIY monitor plans I'm working on:)

first plans will be for passive monitors for those on a budget

i have yorkville ysm-1s, with a hafler TA1600 amp.

a couple of years ago i built a pair of 3-way hi-fi loudspeakers. it was a fun project, but i ended up spending far more time and money on it than i anticipated. in the end, though, they did sound pretty hot. with 12" NHT1259 woofers, they have some serious bass extension.

You'll end up spending more in parts & labor than you'll spend on budget monitors...and you also won't have to spend months researching the physics of speaker cabinet construction. I too have tried projects like this and yeah, they get real expensive real quick.

That said, I use Event 20/20's powered by a TA1600...only $450 total.

I have a set of big honkin passives... LOUD ONES!

and I aslo use a small nearfield set of active (Event 5") for mixes

I have a pair of JBL 4311's that were too large for my current room, so I moved down to Event 20/20's.

I use a 1970's vintage Dynaco 120 amp for power.

I am using Yamaha something or anothers (passive) and I power them with and Alesis RA100. Works for now I guess. :rolleyes:
 
I use Tannoy Reveals with an Alesis RA300. I also use Aurotone Cubes, Alesis Monitor Ones and some Optimus 77 (I use a signal router to change from one set of speakers to another). I mostly use the Monitor Ones for basic tracking, the Reveals for mixing and the other speakers for additional reference.
 
I'm using the Yorkville YSM-1, and they are powered by a Yamaha integrated amplifier.

This amp also runs a couple of tape decks, CD player, phone, and has a pure through switch to cut off any coloration from the amp.

Works for me.

I'm using Event 20/20s. And I'm ashamed to admit that although I bought a second-hand Yamaha power amp for them, I still have them hooked up to a JVC receiver/amp. I'll get arround to switching one of these days....
 
Using Alesis Monitor One's powered by a Sony Mini-component system.

It sucks though. Not exactly sure whether it's the speakers or the amp. Sucks = harsh sounding, poor bass response, very fatiguing.

A Halfer TA1600 will be here Thursday :) Should make things at least a little better.
 
KRK Rokits powered with a vintage BGW 7000 (with enough iron to use as a mooring).

Tannoy Proto-J's with a Technics receiver. No complaints so far.

Just got my Hafler TA1600.

Bass response is now better and sound is a little less harsh. But still things don't sound that great.

Important note: These comments are made before the amp's suggested 1 hour warm up period.
 
I'm using passives...Yamaha NS-1000Ms as mid-fields. Been using a Hafler TA1600 on them. But next week, I'll be hearing what the results are with my DaviSound TB-8.

I still have passive Event 20/20s as near-fields, but I haven't been using them for a few months as there's no place to set them in the control room right now.

Glad to see you did eventually get the TA1600... Was your 20/20 problem solved?

I have some yorkies and a hafler. Are they good...... I dont know. I just got them because everbody else had them.
