I'm getting ready to record my debut album in a professional studio (I'm doing all the tracking myself in the home studio). I realize that on a cdr, in the home studio, I am limited to 74 or 80 minutes depending on the disk. What is the limit for a professional/comercial cd recorded/mixed in the studio. I've seen bands put out recordings with greater than 80 minutes of music on a cd. Is this easy/commn, or am I limited to the 74/80 minutes like a cdr????

Can you name names?

Actually----I can't name names. Now that I've checked most of my cds I don't see any beyond 70 minutes. I could swear that there are some that have---but apparently I'm a fool!!!??? What I meant to say was I thought you could go over 74/80 minutes with professional (not cdr's) cds. Is 74 or 80 minutes the absolute cutoff???!!!

Yes it is. The audio CD format is pretty cut and dried.

One can, of course, save more than 80 minutes worth of MP3s on a CD-R but that's not the same thing.

Theoretically you should be able to get more than 80 minutes of audio. I assume this would be nothing more than overburning, but I don't think you can do it reliably and it greatly depends on the burner, the cdr media, and bandwidth.

I am pretty sure the only way to go beyond the standard limitations is in a production lab, not in the studio. And they never go much beyond it from what I've heard.

The Redbook CD standard is 74 minutes max... many CD players will not even bother trying to read beyond that because it is a standard.

The 80-minutes came about because of the computer industry's use of CD-Rs for data storage.

You'll have difficulty finding a duplication/mastering place that'll give you an 80-min glass master (because of the strict tolerances provided by Redbook.)

Thanks guys! I guess I can't put 24 songs on my debut cd!!! :-)

Or............
Use most of the songs for your debute CD, then use some of the songs for your next release.

My guess is the will be the 1st and the last---unless I catch a lucky break!!! :-)

Reminds me of that dude in the movie Wonder Boys, Who didnt have writers block but rather was on his 2000th page and couldnt stop writing.

Dont blow your load just yet, Im sure you could you can find some stuff there you can save for the next project.
