I dont think I'm lazy ,if I had all the mics I wanted and all the inputs I need then maybee I would use them but I have done alot of recording and from a drummers perspective(is there such a thing) I prefer the sound of the kick/snare o.h. .In fact when I do live shows I more often than not use this mic set up ,especialy in a place where they dont have that much gear it just seems to sound better to have the over all kit coming through the p.a. than just the 4 drums the spill dosn't do it for me. but what works works and each to his own its horses for courses if we all did the same thing what aboring place the world would be and if I had a dollar for every.............................
I use two Radio Shack PZM mics screwed to the ceiling as overheads, and whatevers handy on the bass drum. Sounds good to me, but I am not that picky about drum sounds.
when i record my drums i use 3 mics...
1-RYDER DYNAMIC MIC (OVER HEAD RIGHT)
1- APEX 950 DYNAMIC MIC (OVER HEAD RIGHT)
1-OLD MIC IM NOT SURE WHAT ITS MAKE IS.. I FOUND IT AT A GARAGE SALE FOR $2.00 TAHT I STRAPPES TO THE TRIPOD OF AN OLD HI HAT STAND (BASS DRUM)
AND THATS IT...
I AM GETTING ANOTHER APEX 950 FOR THE SNARE PROBABLY BUT FOR NOW I LIKE MY SETUP...ONCE I USED 1 OVER HEAD MIC AND I LIKED THE SOUND.. VERY RANCHY
Hello all, Im a newbie and this is my first post...
I've used a couple of different setups,
two radioshack optimus dynamic mics, one on the snare, one on the kick and a Teac on the hat. it sounded horrible.
My current set up which I enjoy is a AKG D770 on the snare, a D550 in the kick and a pair of Rode NT3's as overheads.
I also got a brilliant result by duct taping a pair of D770s from the ceiling above the kit.
So all up, 4. most of the time I use inimalist drumming, so It covers it well, but If Im recording someone else, I usually use a few extra dynamics for covering the toms(but like most people, I dont cover the hats...)
Depends on what I'm recording, but when I'm really in the mood I use:
1 - BD sometimes 2 mics on BD
2 - Sn top
3 - Sn bottom
4 - Tom 1
5 - Tom 2
6 - Tom 3
7 - Hi-hat
8 - OH
9 - OH
10 - ambience
11 - ambience
This setup (12 mics) gives me alot of possibilities to make the kit sound like I (or the producer) want and that's always welcome when it comes to mixing.
I use the 4 Mic setup, I recently purchased a pair of Marshall V63M's from Mars for 80 bucks a piece. They sound fantastic and really make the cymbals sizzle.

The MXL 2001 is used to add room sound to the Snare.
It is gated in the mix, and the Key is trigger by the Snare track recorded with the Beyer M422 mounted inside the snare drum.
We are finally regrouping, and have some material in the works. We have a possible backer, so I'll be posting some Mp3's in the near future to let you guys have a listen.
I've been spending alot more time playing around with the actual tuning of my drumkit, trying to find the optimum pitches for these shells, and I think I have found them.
