How many mic pre's do you have?

I use the JoeMeek TwinQcs on kick and snare. Usually I'll use the Sytek Burr Brown channels on overheads and the other two on toms. Sometimes that's reversed. Anything else goes through my DM-24's pres.

I also have a Mackie 1202 VLZ-Pro that's pulling PA duties I can use if I wanted to.
 
Sean, I occasionally record an acapella group who are shooting
for the world championship over the next couple of years and
they get recorded on (drumroll please)...
A Behringer mixer!!!

They're just practice recordings and they still sound darn good
IMHO, despite the "low fat" of the Eurodesk's pre's.
(has "something" to do with their singing strangely enough)

recording with a 15" speaker..,

hey i heard you guys talking about recording with a sub or 15" speaker.. i tried this 2 years ago with amazing results, but it's very sensitive.. don't put it up against bass drum, i had two 15s aimed in at the kit from about 10 feet back a piece they still drove my preamps crazy, but with a little lowpass ther was no audible distortion, and a very big, bassy, tubey low end room rumble was caused.. it made the toms, and bass drum sound great when mixed in with another stereo pair of room mics.. like i said they were slightly breaking up and needed no compression at all i'd do it again if i didn't sell my subs for gas money to get from one coast to the other!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you can't sub-mix anything if you don't have enough mic pres for the mics to mic the drums. that is of course you were only using one or two mics.
 
youre gonna submix all the drums thru one mic pre?

Now with this kind of philosophy I was really eager to see you studio...only to find out it doesn't work on macintosh. You must have one hell of a good name in your neighbourhood to get away with this kind of thinking.
I personally don't accept jobs I can't relate to in a artistic manner (known as really sad cases, eg no credits possible), but I would never tell a client what his sound should be.....though i often work with clients who learn during studiosessions that their strengt is not lying in the direction they are heading right now, I also learned to you only get away with sending them off in a different direction is by respecting them and their 'lack of experience'

I was eager to see what some of your arsenals were like.
I'm still shopping for my next outboard pair. I got over sticker shock a long time ago, so I caan probably swing about $2500-$3000 for my next purchase. I really like the idea of onboard eq with the pre. Any suggestions?
 
I would make a lot more money with a different philosophy, but just as I dont any car doing well at ALL types of races, I believe that my specialty is in music where drums drive it.

Not that I cant do other stuff, but maybe theres someone who can do better than me at it.

I "take all comers" as far as it goes, but cant feel that I have done my best job if theres not the outcome I expect.

as for the mac thing .... we had one running logic at my last place and it was fun! Here we have a separate room for midi stuff, so I only use a computer for the editing jobs, which I cant find a mac ap to do the type of work Im needing to do. Not that the particular app on the PC is all that perfect either
