How low can you go with a 4x10"?

Guitar Amps are usually matched to the speaker because overdriving the speaker is desireable. With bass amps, it's better to have more speaker than amp because low frequencies overdrive easier than highs. When overdriving the speaker is wasting power so a 100% increase in wattage may only cause a 40% increase in SPL. Basicly with more speaker, you can use your power amp more efficiently.

Great, thanks! I'm using a Vox AC50 (50 watts that sweeps the floor with most other amps I've tried) and I just got offered to buy a 4x10 Ampeg speaker, I think it's 300 watts. So if I understand you correctly, the difference in power could never be a disadvantage (for bass amps).

Cheers
