boom box recordings
How is this layout. Any big problems or small ones? I am a newb to this, and I plan own building one in the next year or two.
Anyone have any layouts or any links?

That's not a lot of room. At the most I'd have a control room and the rest studio. My control room is 12x16 and it's TIGHT. You might even consider an all in one room.

i second the all in one room idea.
it complicates things immensely to chop it up like that, and it's hard to make any of those small spaces sound good. Plus, unless you have super-duper control setups, it's hard to quickyl adjust anything if you are there alone.

I plan on using a KVM roll around stand for tracking alone.

I agree with you both on the size issue. the reason for the booths are just for isolation if a band wants to record in a live demo situation.

I'm working on another drawing.

Use one big tracking room for sure. If the band want to record a live demo then thats your best option. Dont block everyone off into little rooms. Sure there might be spill if you dont control it, that will add to the character. Just track the instruments then do the vocals after. You could even just build a vocal booth. Personally i would use a load of gobos.

Gobos?

Iam working on a new layout using ISO cabinets with patch panels instead of rooms for guitar and bass amps. Not to say I would use them in every case. I currently use Iso boxes and they seam to work well for a particular mic as well.

A Gobo or "go between" is an acoustic panel that can be moved around along with others to form Reflective/absorbant areas in the recording environment. You usually see them in recording studios.

Heres some in Abbey Road.

lol, must be nice to have a concert hall to record in. It seems like a very useful panel to use in my situation.

Hmm this will alter my drawing. thanks again

I prefer that layout to the last one, plus with those little nooks you will be able to get some separation from the amps on drum tracks etc.

Hmm, Here's my suggestion. With the amp booth, it could be split in two, low and high.

yeah It is not built yet. This would be a seperate building all on its own. I can choose what ever i wish for the size.

Thanks for the drawing. I do like your control room positioning in the building. Is there a formula to this shape of control room?

I think i am not going to worry with the amp isolation now.

I am in the very beginning stages of this. I would like to get out of this not spending a fortune but I know there will be cost.

If you were to build mine then, without the amp iso, just make the vocal booth bigger...
