I have gotten a mixer that's "inserts" and "outs" share the same jacks.....How am I supposed to hook up a dynamic processor while recording? I mean, I guess I could instead of using a y adapter and sending the processed signal back, then sending it through the out's like a regular mixer, I could go INSERT/OUT>COMPRESSOR>RECORDER. You know? Instead of bringing it back through the instert, and having the processed signal go through the outs. Would that work?

And even if it would, wouldn't it be useless? I wouldn't be able to hear the processed signal, since it would be going directly to the recorder. I wouldn't be able to hear it, which makes it completely useless!

Does this make sense?

From what I gather this feature is to add, for instance, compression pre-fade, to the signal on that channel. Using an insert calbe, which looks similar to a Y adapter, but (again, from my understanding, and I'm no Pro) the single "insert" plug acts as the in and out with one of the connections on the other end being the IN for the compressor in this instance, and the other being the OUT. Now, I mentioned the same thing you did about taking it straight to a recording source. It would almost be the same as plugging straight into the recording source from what I'm told.

hey guys, thanks for the help! I've got a peavey mdII 16X2. I understand that I can use the instert to both send and recieve back the processed signal, but then how in the world am I supposed to send that signal outboard to a recorder, if the insert jack is also the out jack?

Since I only record one track at a time, I GUESS what I could do to be able to send the signal to a recorder is to use the INSERT/OUT jack to hook up a compressor, then, since the OUT jack is being used for the INSERT, I could pan the channel all the way to the left or right, and use one of the main outs as a way to send the signal to the recorder. Would this work ok?
