How hot should a 388 get?

Ive been testing out the functions on my 388 and recording a few things and ive noticed that the top of it gets ridiculously hot. Even if its just been on for like 15 minutes. There is no smoke smell, and the performance doesnt change. But it gets extremely hot near the power supply.

Is this normal?
 
Well, it does indeed get warm, in that area but what do you mean by "ridiculously / extremely hot"? What's extreme may be just warm to me so it's a bit subjective but still I'd be concerned.

Well the top panel gets really really warm, enough to be surprising. But the thing with ridges on the back near the power supply gets so hot you have to take your hand away. I mean, you can leave it there and you wont get a burn, but the instinct to pull it away is triggered almost instantly.

Is that normal and what might be causing that?
 
Well, I can tell you that the top part gets warm (normal) and that the back heat sink (ridges) is what dissipates heat and will get warm or even a bit hot. If any of this gets extreme, on the uncomfortable level then listen to your instinct. Make sure nothing covers the top of the hole, above the power supply and that sufficient ventilation is present in the surrounding area. I don't know how you can actually measure or test that the power supply is working properly. Hopefully someone will chime in.:confused:

The oldest of the 388's top panel had no vents. It would get noticeably hot. Therefore, somewhere along the line, TEAC made the 388's top panel with vent louvers. Sounds to me like you got the model without the vents.

It shouldn't be a problem, just don't put flammables or plastic reels on top of it.:eek:;)
 
Just a thought, but can you check the voltage of the power supply? I don't know what it should be but that may be option 1. Option 2 is to install a small computer fan to try to dissipate some of the heat.

I greatly appreciate everyones advice on this.

The 388 i have has some vents over the power supply. I guess im just going to have to take this as it is since i dont know how to tell whether its normal or not.
 
Another thought, if you have a digital or infrared thermometer you can take a few readings and post them to let us know just how hot this thing is getting. Maybe someone who has this model can take the temp on theirs and compair the two.
