How high is TOO HIGH to raise my pickup?

Duncan makes several humbuckers which will fit in your Les Paul and sound similar to the hotrails. I have a friend with dual hotrails in the bridge position on his Les Paul. With a little imagination and the right tools almost any mod can be made to almost any guitar.

I just spent time to answer your question and try to help you! I do this stuff for a living ya know;)
I have to agree with Farview though....if you like the sound of the hotrails then you probably want a much hotter pickup....there's all kinds of them out there.
Regarding pickup height though, no, not everyone wants max output, but it sounds like you do....that's why i suggested getting the pickup as close to the strings as possible. The 2 things to watch out for are:
1- you don't want the pickup so close that the string hits the pickup if you play hard or palm mute etc.
2- if the string is too close then the magnetic field will start fuckin' with the string...weird wolf tones, wacky intonation (much more problematic on a strat than a lester BTW)
