How good are the Omni box's preamps?

I originally posted this at audioforums.com, but nobody was biting over there. Anyway:

Now that my collection of gear is starting to increase (thank you, student loans!), I'm starting to wonder about mic preamps. I have a Yamaha MX12/4 mixer and the M-Audio Omni Studio. I have the mixer in another room (hey, just like a real studio!), and I run cables back to the Omni box to record on my PC, which is in my bedroom. It's been working great so far. My question concerns the quality of the preamps in the Omni box--I assume they're better to some degree than the preamps in my mixer, but how much? And how much better would a quality stand-alone unit be (just for recording vocals and stuff like that)? I just got a CAD M-37, and I'd like to be able to use it to its fullest.

I'm satisfied with the Omni pre-amps.

I don't know what the Yamaha pre's sound like but I think you could safely use the Omni pre's.

It would be smart to do an A/B test before you really dig into a project but I don't think there's anything to worry about.

I use mine with a Shure SM81 for acoustic guitar and I use a Rode NTK for vocals with good results.

If the preamps are anything like the 01V's there their shit. I reocred a demo CD with my band last year using them, very ordinary. I think you should still get a seperate pre amp becase geting a good audio signal is very importent. Its easier to us a good preamp a get a good sound right away then to try and fix the problems incured due to a bad pre amp later.
Well thats my thoughts anyway.
I'd be curious to hear peoples review of the omnis pre amps because ive got a dela omni studio (but cant use it untill i get a new computer). But ive also bought a Mindprint Envioce.

This could just be my inexperience talking, but I don't have any specific problem with the preamps on my Yamaha mixer. Stuff I record through it sounds pretty nice to me. On the other hand, I haven't really A/Bed it with the Omni's preamps. And I haven't even used a really nice preamp before. I'm most interested in what people think of the Omni's preamps in comparison to good stand-alone units (i.e., something better than the ART Tube MP or some such cheap unit).
