How does the C-1 stack up to these?

Wussup fellas............
heres the dillema.......... Im in the local mic market (Sam Ash) because the time has come to buy the vocal/acoustic guitar mic that ive been dreaming about. Ive been reading alot of hype lately about the C-1. But, .........alas........SA does not carry Studio Projects stuff. Well I was a bit discouraged but decided that it was the perfect time to demo EVERYTHING that i could......... Here's what i came up with:
(by the way, im feeding in the $300 area)

Rode NT1- not bad, a bit thin and middy

Rode NT2- had an increase in price that i couldnt justify by listening

Shure KSM27- very similar to the NT1

An Audio Technica that i didnt care for much

A really shitty sounding Marshall cond. that sold for 100.00.......shitty

A CAD (I dont recall the Model#)......not bad but as big as a house!

and a Rode NT1000...... the best in the price range by far!!

..........I know i know........ what you like depends on what you are looking for. I would be interested in what anyone else has to say about the mics mentioned above (particularly the NT 1000) and how they compare to the C-1.......
I thank you very much in advance!!! Mike:)

Guernica, if you're in that price range, try the Studio Projects C3 and their
new TB-1 to hear which you like better.
FWIW, before buying the C1, the NT1000 was also tested for vocals by
yours truly. It's also a fine mike, however, it costs more than the C1,
and more importantly, the C1 sounds better on male vocals IMHO.

The C3 is cool because it sounds like a C1 with mega "definition",
and it's multi-pattern to boot so it's very practical as an all round mike.

Chris

YEah, Chess, but MY problem is, I live in Holland. And the C3 costs $620 here...
So, i'm still torn too, between C1, Rode NT1000 and AT 4033 (all around same price here...)
but I'm gonna use it more for electric guitar cabs too, and ofcourse vocals and ac. guitar.
What's your thought?

but I'm gonna use it more for electric guitar cabs too
...I dunno about its use in front of cabs.....but i would like to hear more!

I actually reccomend using something in front of the amps other than the LD condencer I use for vocal due to the fact that even though the SPL rating of the mic may be 130db, I hate to push it, I tend to use a LD that isnt my favorite vocal mic. and its usually 5 feet away with a 57 off axis going into two tracks. on rythem guitar I use the 57 only. This will give you a big Lead guitar sound that will take command of the mix when you pan them at 10 and 2.

the only ld condenser i own is the nt1000, so i may not be qualified to make any sort of comparison. i just wanted to add that i was able to get mine for about $207 shipping included from ebay in brand new condition with everything that a new one comes with. my point is that this is one of those mics (along with the 4033) that have been around long enough that some people may be "upgrading" or selling some equipment and you probably have a better chance of finding one at a decent used price than a c1 or whatever. as far as the nt1000, from what opportunity i've had to use it, i think it sounds great and that's mainly on acoustic. definitely bigger and warmer than my 603s with what seems to be a low mid bump. of course i'm going through an audio buddy into an mt4x cassette 4 track, so i'm waiting till my soundraft mixer and ampex 2 track reel to reel come in to really try it out. also, don't be afraid to try the search function to learn about a mic.

Heres my advice, buy the C1, C3 or T3. These mics have not only been raved about here....they have been DROOLED over by PRO engineers in LA and New York. They are sweet mics - I had an Audio Technica 4060 tube mic($900) and it just sounded kind of dry and clinical......it took alot of EQing to get things to sound like I wanted - Also had a Rode NT2......absolute crap, very harsh - Then I got a C3 and loved it on acoustic guitar/upright bass/vocals

If you dont get a Studio Projects, go for the RODE NTK

Speed, (best "bones" McCoy imitation) "Damn it Jim, I'm a singer not a
guitarist!"

One correlation that seems to hold up is that a good LD condenser for
vocals is also good for at least acoustic guitar IMHO.
The C1 did seem somewhat superior for male vocals than the NT1000 IMO.

Chris

P.S. Keep in mind that Alan Hyatt can help you with application questions.

t3 and ntk arn't quite in his budget.

i love the SP stuff though. C1 is a good mic.

In the $300 range, the Studio Projects TB-1 is in his budget.I just got one recently and I am loving it.Very present but oh so smoooooth.I like this mic more every time I plug it in.My only regret is that I can't afford another one.Very nice.

thanks a bunch everyone. Randy, ....just a few quick questions about the tb 1. How is it for recording acoustic guitar? Does the tube situation bring in much unwanted noise?.....How does it compare to others (the c-1 for example) in vocal situations?..... thanks a million, Mike:)

Mike,I haven't tried it too much on acoustic but here is a little story.I was recording a girl singing and playing guitar last week and had the TB-1 set up for vocals and a cheap Nady sd on her guitar. When I went to mix the tracks there was an artifact on the guitar track that I hadn't noticed so I muted the track and just brought the fader up for the TB-1 track. It picked up the acoustic guitar very nicely,it had a shimmer and a clarity that was definately lacking in the Nady tracks.Keep in mind that the guitar that she was playing was a Washburn D-10 which is far from their flagship model but man did it sound nice.I think it would do a nice job on acoustic.

As far as noise goes,I ran the TB-1 into my Audio Buddy and then directly into my Audiophile sound card and noise was never an issue.

As far as a C-1 comparison,I haven't used the C-1 so I can't say.A friend is supposed to borrow the TB-1 and AB it to his C-3 on his girlfriends voice, when he does I'll let you know if you want. The only other condensers I have to compare it to are a piece of shit Marshall2001p and an Audio Technica 3525.I really like the 3525 but the TB-1 just blows it away.It has a very in your face sound without a trace of harshness, this baby is smoooooooth!

I dunno where everyone lives exactly, but I'm from Holland, and we have only 1 SP-dealer.
The prices are WAY higher than in USA:
C1 $314
C3 $620
T3 $1150

B1 $150
B3 $250
TB-1 $510

Remco

the dealer is Jules Stevenhagen. Check his site www.jtmaudio.nl

(grappig trouwens, ik heet ook remco!)
I believe the C1 will cost ya fl. 800,- (€361, $ 314) incl BTW.
He can send you an SP by mail to check it out. According to him no one has returned them yet (well, they DID pay for it! ) because they like it so much.

thanx speed for the reply,
fl 800 ?
this is double the us $$$$ right ?, unbelivable !
Is it better 2 buy it outside the country borders then , or are the shipping costs that high ?

Maybe mr hyatt can explain this ???

remco
