How Does Selection Of Mic Effect Tone?

I am relatively new to recording although I have played guitar for
40 years. Recently, I bought a digital recorder and a Behringer mixer.
I have noticed that my voice in the recordings- althought in key-
seems higher pitched than what I hear. Granted that I will never be
a Baritone or a Bass, I wonder if a different mic might give my voice
a little better tonal quality ( I need all the help I can get). Any suggestions
will be greatly appreciated. I know very little about this so anything will
help.
Thanks,
Jack

Yes, it could. You don't mention what mic your are using, but you could also try moving closer to the mic which will enhance a directional mic's bass response (the 'proximity effect'). Keep the mic a little above your mouth to avoid breath pops, or get a pop filter.

What mic are you using?

Yes microphones can have a huge difference in how your voice sounds recorded. Placement can change the sound drastically as well.

It could just be the difference between how you hear your voice when you sing, and how it sounds played back. I would say given a quality ~$100 mic, the differences in tone are going to be pretty subtle. They may emphasize certain frequencies slightly but should still give an pretty accurate representation of your voice.

I agree with that. I think too that most voices recorded with a MXL V67, MXL 990 and a Shure SM57 will sound very different. And as mshilarious said, proximity is everything with directional mic's.
