could you tell me if it is better to compress during tracking or during mixing. And how do you compress during mixing

Most everyone is going to tell that you should only compress after tracking because if you compress to much while tracking then your stuck with it......And since you don't really know how much compression is needed on each specified track until after the tracking is done, then it's best to just wait.....That's what everyone usually says

I on the other hand compress while tracking alot....It varies though, depending on the type of tunes I'm recording and the instrument being tracked and the skill of the musician who is playing the instrument.

The easy way to compress after mixing is to use software plugins...You set the ration press a button and ba da bing the track or the entire mix can be compressed *don't try and compress the entire mix all at once unless you know what your doing, or at least that's what they tell me * ......You could also run the entire mix back out of the tracking device and into an outboard compressor and compress after tracking that way........It's your choice!

hope that helps

It is SAFE to compress during mixing unless there is a "sound" that you want to get during tracking via using a certain compressor or certain compressor settings. For example most engineers will compress vocals to tape to limit large volume spikes, I tend to compress the kick, snare, vocals and bass ALWAYS during mixing, but the first few times that I had tried this I screwed up large and there was nothing I could do about it because the sound was already compressed to tape, this is why I say its SAFE to compress during the mix.

To compress during the mix via hands on gear (physical mixer, rack compressor) just plug the compressor into the inserts of the channel on the mixer that you want compressed, or place the compressor between the tape machine and the mixer running a direct connection from the direct output to the compressor to the mixer. :)

Ok I have a delta 1010, a soundcraft mixer and a dbx compressor can you tell me how to set it up if I record and track in cubase what to do after I finish recording. how to I compress it then?

I never compress when tracking myself, but If you are familiar with your compressor and know how it will affect the persons voice, it's ok to use it on tracking....

I have a friend that im always recording and I know how his voice works with compression, so I compress him while he's tracking .. the smoothness of his voice makes him a more confident singer...

I never screw it up either... I know how I want it to sound in the end, and set the compressor that way on tracking..
