How do you run premade MIDI through Kontakt 4?

Ok, I'm pretty n00bish, so please bare with me!

I'm running Cubase LE4, I've got Kontakt 4 with the Scarbee Pre-Bass plugin. What I want to do is use a premade MIDI track, run it through Scarbee Pre-Bass and record it into Cubase. I'm pretty sure there has to be a way to do this, but I'm not having any luck figuring it out... so any input would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

The midi file will most likely be in the "general midi" format so each instrument will be on a separate midi channel. When you open a midi file in cubase it should open each instrument in it's own track. Simply select the track you want to playback through kontakt and assign it's midi out to the kontakt player.

Use it as a plugin inside Cubase. Assign your midi track to use it as output.

Ok, really going to be showing off my n00bishness now gents...

I open the MIDI file, and as you said, it opens up each instrument on it's own track. I'm not seeing any way to assign it's MIDI out to Kontakt though.

Now, is there a "MIDI out" tab that I'm missing somewhere perhaps? Or is it just "Output Routing" for that particular MIDI track? If the latter, then Kontakt is not showing up as an option, just Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and TASCAM US144-MIDI (my USB interface).

Probably something simple I'm missing. I'm presuming I have to have a Virtual Instrument track with Kontakt loaded at the same time as I have the MIDI track. I've tried loading them one first, then the other, and the other way around... that didn't seem to do it. Any more ideas?

Cheers!

you have to add Kontakt as a VSTI in your instrument rack (F11) then it will be available as an output.

Thanks altitude, appreciate the quick responses! But unfortunately it's still not working for me. I checked the user manual and Key Commands, and by default Cubase LE4 doesn't have F11 assigned to any function.

I'll give a detailed description of what I'm doing, hopefully someone will be able point out what I'm doing wrong:

Start CuBase LE4
File>New Project>Empty (under templates)
Project>Add Track>Instrument>Kontakt 4 (under Add Instrument Track)
Default settings on Kontakt 4; Input Routing - All MIDI Inputs; Instrument - Kontakt 4
Open Edit Instrument>Load Scarebee Pre-Bass (under Libraries, under Instruments)
Back to Cubase LE4 interface
File>Import>MIDI File...>No (under do you want to create a new project)>Load the MIDI file I want to use
Default setting on MIDI track just opened; Input Routing - All MIDI Inputs; Output Routing - Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth (with my other options being Not Connected and TASCAM US - 144 MIDI); Bank Selector - Off; Patch Selector - Off
Not sure if it's of relevance or not, but under Devices>MIDI Device Manager there are (by default) no devices installed
Also of note, when I load HALionOne (instead of Kontakt 4) as an Instrument track, I'm not given the option to choose HALionOne under the Output Routing of my MIDI track

If you read thru all that... my thanks! If you can tell me where I'm screwing up... a billion thanks!

Cheers!

dont load an instrument track, just add Kontakt under VST instruments, where ever it is (I cant believe they would pull that feature from LE). Otherwise, create the instrument track, open the midi file and just copy to midi data of interest to the midi track that was opened when you added an instrument file

Success! The second tip did the trick sir... one billion thanks for you!

It would seem that there is no VST Instruments feature on Cubase LE4, at least not in the way you're describing it. I'm guessing it is an option under the Devices selection in different (better) version of CB, but with LE4 I'm restricted to opening a new instrument track.

Happy!!
