When & Where did you cop that?
My partners been looking for one, I guess it's kinda hard to come by. How do you rank it compared to the Akai's?

i bought it from this guy from on the the EMU Command Station yahoo group that was sellin his..

i never used an Akai..but i love the sounds compared to my Yamaha RM1X(that im about to sell)..sounds are tight and upto date..

got the Mo Phatt, Composer, XL Lead and Pro123 ..lookin for more ROM for it now..to add more sounds..

nice thread. good bump.

i do about what everyone els does.

start with the drums, let the groove of the drums, dictate somewhat what the beat will sound like.
i start with the bass kick and snare, and then come in with the hi-hats etc...
(if you use reason like me) i'll program a harp sound or a low string sound onto one of the redrum channels and let that hit on the down beat.

then ill fuck around with a melody using different sounds. once i get something i like,
ill go back, and throw a change up in. (if its needed)

then i finish it with some effects. then comes the mastering.

im still pretty new to beatmaking though. this might change overtime.

what i do is.....

i find a rhythm, then add a clap or snare depends on the feel i get, i then search for a nice kick, then look for any other percussions that the beat brings out of me, i usually top it off with a nice drop . i love hi hats, but i'm learning to use them more sparingly. after that i usually go back and tighten up the beat by replacing the sounds as necessary. i usually check the beat a few times a day for a couple of days thinking damn this is hot, then i give it a break for about a week and come back to it. after a week i'm no longer partial to it, so after the first 10 seconds i either love it or hate it.

all my stuff so far has been sample based; no synth or anything...so i just chill out and listen to music...when i find a song that could be worked into a beat, i sample that and try to beat match it. after i that, ill start looking for different segments, and cutting them. sometimes I sample individual sounds from the song, and work out my own melody just by transposing the sound. after ive got a basis for what it should sound like , ill make a real simple drum loop, one or two measures long, and once thats alll done, ill work out an intro, maybe check out if i can lift a bassline from the song.

First of I prep all of my equipment...like; opening the coke bottle, turning on my amp, kill the tv, unmount my doorbell (I've had a few neighbours over due to some midnight producing), sit my ass down on my less than perfect chair, grabbing my very simple midiboard (which is a freakin testemony of my intelligence, in the way that two of the keys was F'ed up, but nothing a little creativity couldn't handle), and finally firing up Reason or Cubase.

I find myself having different sessions. Some of which is pre production sessions where I'm getting an initial idea down, or just playing around with the board. Sometimes I have "layering-sessions" and try to make up some meaty kick or crispy snare, or just make something unusual. All my stuff is all layered out for me when I go about producing, cause for those of you in here being serious about this you know how the brain works, and the relationship between the left and right handside of your brain. You might not KNOW what I'm talking about, but I guarantee you that you've at some point found yourself smack in the middle of that shit.

I start with whatever's gonna be a the hook of the track(not "hook" as in chorus, but "hook" as the the very little thing that's in your track that makes it stand out. Or should make it stand out that is...) If I'm making a track that is samplebased, this really isn't the biggest issue to conquer. Anyways, then I build the track around that.
I keep the building the track until I'm happy with the overall feel to it. After each instrument and element I add, I also strap on a compressor to harness the sound, and to bring it to a steady level. This sort of depends on what style I'm going for, but it's usually what I do. When the track's kicking, I'll shitmix it and bounce it down. Then it's of to shitmastering/shitmas'ing it and trying to make it fit into my 512mb mp3player(I knew I should have gone for the iPod).
I'll listen to this for a few days, making notes of the pro's and the con's, mental notes...Then I "air" it around for people to check the respons. Then I usually get someone that wants something and it's off to remove the dislikes, make a proper mix, and mastering it to the best of my knowledge. Leaving some room in the master for the cats to track it.

Recording sessions...
Sorry man, gonna have to get back to you on that cause there ain't no way in heaven I'm gonna be inside when the honeys are out with their twins hehe

This is a good thread. I'm surprised not to see more from people on it. I usually have the drum track in my head, starting with the hi-hats, kicks, and snares. I might beatbox it a little so I can hear something outside of my head. If I still like what I hear (and can remember it by the time I hit the lab), it's off into Reason to arrange the track. Usually, as I'm recording the drum track, I'm thinking about instruments and synths to accompany the track. Once I have it all put together in an 8 bar section, I mix it down and arrange it. I think I spend more time listening to and evalutating the beat than making it. Sometimes I can see the whole thing in my head and can just work from that.

After that, it's either time to write down the lyrics or see if any lyrics I have would be a good fit for the track. I probably have over 500 songs written and I write more all the time, but I usually try to custom fit the beat unless I'm writing it for a song I have already written.

thats real good..i know i be here at work ..gotta nice beat in my head..then we i get home i forget the whole damn beat we i get to my XL-7..i be mad..cause i would come up with something different..

i think im goin to leard how to write music so i wont forget :)

Man I heeeeaaarrrd that. See me pissed off when I got a real banger in my head but as soon as I hit the house....it's gone. I "might" be lucky enough to get it back, but that's a "might". I know if the track lingers in my head for a couple of days or more then that's a sign it's gonna be a good one usually. I got one in my head right now but I get to wait 6 hours before I can do anything with it. Might be a good collab track though...just have to wait and see. I'm hoping to get my soundclick up and running by this weekend while I'm working on setting up my website.

yeah i hear that..let us know when your site is up..

If you want to check the blueprint I'm making on Angelfire (just to see how the scripting will look on the final...I always do a rough draft on the sites before the real deal) here's the addresses. I have one for the beats and one for the label, but I'm probably going to go with the look for the label and combine it all into one site and sell beats from the label. I'm still editing some of it to get it the way I like them, so there might be some changes here and there.

Anyway, here they are

cool its looking good..i peep them earlier..when i seen you had posted them up..real nice..

Appreciate that. Glad to see that most of the people I meet these days aren't straight haters. Big up homie.

how do i record ??? very carefully.. naw seriously i try to get the best of both worlds so i record one track at a time into my mr-8 to avoid any latnecy/hardware conflicts then transfer into cubase sx to mix, final stereo mix goes into adobe audition. i am very please with mr-8 because i know its limits and do try to go beyond them.

Man this was a good thread....I'd hate to see it go. What up ya'll?

did some searching and came up with this...add more fiya to the fuel(yes I said it the way I meant to) real good topic..I know we got newcomers in the mix..so put your inputs in become part of the family..

The very first thing I work on is the drum track!! Rarely would I start with the sample.... The drum track(s) to me is what shapes da the beat.... If the drum track ain't on point it doesn't matter what you do afterwards in my opinion!!
