How do you record your drums into your soundcard?

If you use a soundcard.

I have an EMU 0404 and right now I have a 2 channel mixer. My question is if the sound card has only two inputs a left and right how do you go about hooking up a mixer with enough channels to record drums?

I use a Firepod. It's an 8-channel FireWire soundcard basically. XLR or 1/4" inputs and 8 outs, or you can run it line out or control room out. Also there are separate gain knobs for the inputs and phantom power for condensor mics...

Although if you are using a mixer with a 2-channel sound card, wouldn't you just run the output of the mixer into the sound card, and you'd have to pre-mix everything?

I've got 2 Layla 24/96s. I run my close mics (dynamics) into an M-Audio Octane and my overheads (condensors) into an M-Audio DMP-3. The outs of these pres go directly into the analog inputs of one of the Laylas.

So what your saying is that if I use say, 5 channels at once, there is a place on the mixer where all the channel info comes out in one place? what type of connection is it usually, Mic, 1/4 or something else?

I know my sound card/cubasis software has like 100 channels, so if all the info from the 5 channel mixer comes from a single output to the soundcard, how is it then singled out in the sofware's mixer's?

I've never heard of a soundcard that has 100 channels. 10 ins is the most I've seen.

What sirslurpee is talking about is what's known as a submix. You use the mixer to get the best balance from your mics, then record the main stereo output from the mixer.

I'm really surprised by the question, though. I thought you've been doing this long enough to know.

No, I was using a 4 track for a while and finally got a computer and soundcard, and a little 2 channel mixer. I probably would know more if I didn't frequent the dragoncave so much. :)

So the drums would be on one channel in the computer.
Would it even sound good though? I might as well just use one central mic to get the idea of my songs right now.

No, if you do a stereo submix, it would be two channels (but just one stereo track).
