Yeah, I think there were upwards of 1,500 fatalities last year alone due to home recordists attempting to master. You have to spend 20 years in a Himalayan monastery studying and meditating with Buddhist monks. Oh Yeah, you gotta be born with the sign of the chosen few. If you don't know what the sign is, you don't have it.

I think the best approach to mastering from a home recording situation is as follows:

1. Work your ass off to write good tunes
2. Work your ass off to perform and properly track your good tunes
3. The tracks will mix themselves
4. Create a pre-mastered mix with detailed notes on where fades and spaces should be. That way you will have something ready for someone else to master if at some point later you really feel the need to spit and polish.
5. Try your luck at mastering just for shits and giggles. If it improves your mixes, good for you. If not, go get a sandwich.

Wavelab. I use wavelab. But you can't master your own mixes. Remember that.
