Do you place them vertical with the tweets on top or horizontal with the tweets on the outside? What's your reasoning, personal preference or some crazy acoustic calculation?
The most typical (and accurate) positioning would be vertical, with the monitors placed to form an equilateral triangle between your listening position and the monitor location.
I might add, get the monitors off the carpet if you have carpet. I found these short lift stands; they get my Yorks a few inches off the deck; I guess it also depends on your room, etc.
I kind of fidget with the positioning of the monitors to suit the project -- all personal of course.
That's what I thought. It would make sense to listen with the tweets at the top cause that how most stereos are usually set up. But I have seen alot of studio's place monitors horizontaly.
There's a way to improve things however, I think I saw a picture showing this in Mastering Audio, by Bob Katz. There he says that in order to minimise phase problems between the tweeter and the woofer, one should tilt the monitor such that the distance between your ears and the tweeter equals that between your ears and the woofer.
I hope I made myself clear here.
I suppose this could be done either by tilting the monitor either forward, or more likely backward, OR by adjusing your chair so your ears are at the midpoint between the two.
I was just thinking about this same thing yesterday. I have a pair of Alesis M1 powered monitors so I went to the web and printed out the manual which shows how to set them up both ways:
I like reading manuals for gear that I don't have as it usually gives me a new idea or 2 about how to use what I do have.
In addition to the tweeters horizontal or vertical positioning there's always the - where is the best spot in the room question, or how do I make the spot they're in sound better. That's what I'm up to right now but you weren't asking about that !
I just got a pair of Tannoy Reveals and wasn't very happy with them for a few days, until I placed them vertically, 3' apart(center to center), angled in toward my ears and 3'-3 1/2' from my ears. Also my ears are at the level - midway between the woofer and tweeter. What a big difference this made! It pays to play around with placement.
But if you don't know what that position is, it takes some trial and error(work) to find it. I just prefer the term "playing" to keep it fun - which is what it's all about for me
I really need to get some of those stands. Right now my monitors are elevated by a stack of about 20 8-bit Nintendo game cartridges under each speaker. I'm sure that is not the accepted way of doing things.
