I have pretty bad allergies that can clog up my sinuses, :( and alergy medicines either clog my head up more or give me serious medicine head, and it definatly affects my hearing, as things will sound vastly different at different times depending on my allergies. What have other people done to combat this, should i see a regular doctor, a allergy doctor, an audiologist, all three? I'm considering going back into recording full time (i really miss it), but I know when I did it full time, I made bad mistakes when my head was clogged up.

Any suggestions or wife's tales would be a great help

Thanks in advance!! :D

Try those pills ( Brontosan or Septolette in EU ) , which stops secretion from sinuses. They are based on steroides, so you can mix all night long. ;)

uhhh...

Yo Igor, thanks for the advice, but I just wanna hear, not get all buff like Hans and Franz (you know the "we're gonna pump....... YOU up!" guys)

I AM GUESSING THAT YOU DON'T LIFT WEIGHTS, RIGHT? Well let me tell you that lifting weights and even jogging will strengthen your body so you can react to you allergies better and quicker.

Now I will turn Homerecording.com into a Health and fittness article!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!

Lift weights 3X a week for a total of 12-16 sets a day. Do 2 or 3 body parts a lift day. Jog 3-4 days a week first thing in the morning before breakfast so that you burn fat because your body has been fasting for the 8 hours of sleep. After your done jogging, don't eat for 1 hour so that you keep buring calories for maximum fat burning.

Eat every 2-3 hours. Do Not deprive your self of Protein!!! Mulitply your body weight by 1 or 1.5, and then have that amount of protein a day. Spread it out over 5-6 meals a day, remember eat every 2-3 hours. For carbs it's the same rule. For FAT just keep it around 25-40 grams a day, depending on you metabolism.

LOL....

Frank,

if i burn any fat, I will cease to exist, I'm 5'9, 125 pounds! But i have been thinking about lifting weights, only problem is, i have no room for it and gyms around here are way too expensive. I do own a weight set, with bench, but they are in storage. maybe i can find a place to stick them. I do try to ride my mountain bike at least once a week, it way be a better idea to ride more often, huh?

But thanks for reminding me that keeping my body in shape is the first step!

I sympathise! Got the same problem. Mine was made a lot worse by 'past life" bad habbits, like coke.
Have had 3 nose operations to try and relieve the sinus problems, due for another one next year, because they always grow closed again after about 5 to 6 years.
What helps? Keeping fit is real good advise. I always take a spoon of cod liver oil and a spoon of cider (apple) vinigar every day. Old remedy, stops you from getting colds.
(go on ... puke :)

Sorry. I just checked. Thing is called " Clarinase ", others are for sinus / throat infections. Hope nobody died.

Hi,

I have the same prob. I had to get desensitizing shots. See a allergist and tell them that it is a must that you are symtom free for your occupation. Don't settle on trying new drugs they will push. Get tested for what you are specificly allergic to and get the shots. You will have to get them frequently in the beginning then less frequently as time goes on. I can tell you it is worth any cost or inconvenience.

i may just do that...

nwsoundman,

i did the whole shots thing when i was a kid, did'nt really work, but i heard that your body chemistry changes as you get older, so maybe it will work now...

Thanks

Chris

Have you tried Claritin?

Same problem here, and I got tested for everything you can be allergic to and and nothing came up, so my doctor gave me the Claritin pill and some nose spray calld FloNase...works wonders, just have to wait a week before it kicks in.

If you want something that'll keep your nose clear (clogged nose contributes to a headache) take a snort of Afrin. Works for like 10 hours and it totally clears your nose and head.

OK allergy sounding board open -

I'm 42 now, as a kid I had MEGA allergies (pets, dust, pollen, you name it). Oh and I also was 5'9 125 (coincidence?.....) Anyways I went through allergy shots, one each arm weekly for 2-3 years. They helped a great deal - they can't eliminate an allergy but they largely desensitize you to things. Even after all these years, things like a dog licking me may cause me to itch but don't cause near-death allegy attacks.

I generally stay away from drugs of all sorts, but I have heard good things about Claritin from those who take it. I've considered getting myself checked out for the same "nose job" as sjoko2, one of my co-workers had one in his 20's and said it vastly improved his life. I'm bummed to hear that they close up again... oh well. My own personal favorite is Thai TomYum soup. Guarenteed to clear any sinus condition and tastes good to boot.

I agree with all the exercise tips, after many years as a couch potatoe I have been trying hard to mend my evil ways and shape up. I ballooned up to 175, I'm now down to 160 and shooting for 145.

Just in case you're wondering, the operation, and subsequent ones, have been wonderful.
I got to a point where my hearing was effected, I was in a bad mood 'coz my breathing was always restricted and I had to cut back on my sports. Being a very active person, it sucked 200%.
2 days after the op I felt like a million bucks! Ahhhhhhhhhhh,
air!!!

As I understand it, they basically cut a slit that opens up access to your top nasal cavity, is that correct?

I remember years ago while working in a music store, one of the guys there told me he had it done and his singing voice droped (got deeper) significantly. Didn't effect his speaking voice though. The guy I work with now who had it done in his 20's said it finally allowed his sinuses to drain properly, which (like you said) made for big relief on his part.

In my case, while I don't think my sinuses are outright plugged, they just "feel" restricted in a way that's tough to describe. I guess I just need to go get poked by an M.D. and see what he says.
