serious?
Ok, so for those who are interested in music marketing in todays ever-growing internet world - I'm going to let you in on a few things.
1. Spend money to make money - you get out what you put in, if you're looking for free means of promotion, choose another niche/business whatever.
2. Everything is free for the listener at first - you can't expect people to pay for your music in mass quantity until you've gained their respect as an artist.
3. To gain respect, relate to them - if you're writing the same old bollocks as every other musician it gives listeners nothing new to think about. It's as tiresome as hearing lil wayne 'rap' about money, drink and drugs or ludacris jumping on another terrible track about 'love' with that beiber kid.
4. The music industry is just like any other industry - give the consumer something for nothing to catch their interest, once you have their interest, feed it over and over. Keep them wanting.
To plan your marketing is easy, to actually do it is often not. Find inspiration and motivation and do what you got to do.
Just for the record - myspace is no longer deemed useful in music promotion. Facebook on the other hand, is an extremely powerful tool for marketing when used properly. We started up and tested a 'fanpage' with Facebook, ran specific promotion campaigns, and saw the fanbase shoot from 3 to 481 in 6days. Then we stopped all promotion and left the page hanging by itself, and in the next 7days we only saw an increase of 6 fans. A lot of decent online promotion is expensive, but it's the fastest means to get heard by many.
Hope this helps some of you...
