How do I use my speakers for both Protools and my computer?

Hi. I'm not very technical, and I need help. I have ProTools LE with the Digi 001 interface, and I have connected Roland powered speakers through the Digi 001, which works fine -- I can hear everything I do in Protools through those speakers. However, when I want to listen to mp3's or streaming audio on the computer, I have to listen to them through the sad little built-in speaker on the G4. Is there some way to use different cables or a splitter to connect the speakers to the computer, but still be able to use the speakers for Protools, too? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)
 
split not necessary.

You should be able to run protools through your computer and go from the computer to the powered speakers. If you are a songwriter, check out my thread about zoom projects. There is some info there that you might find interesting regarding getting some feedback about your material.

Thanks for the reply. To clarify, are you saying that I should be connecting the speakers through the back of the computer, instead of through the Digi 001 interface? If so, which type of cable/connection should I use?
 
Isn't there a way to use the digi001 cards outputs for the default playback on the Mac? It is just another soundcard. I am not sure how you go about it on a Mac, but on a PC, you go into the Control Panel under Sounds and Multimedia and configure it there. I am sure Mac has SOME way to do the same.
 
Mac w/ OS 10.2.8 or higher =

1. System Preferences

2. Sound

3. Click the output tab & select your soundcard, instead of "built-in audio controller"

4. Click the input tab & make sure the proper audio input is selected (not built-in audio controller)

5. Click the sound effects tab and do the same if you want your system sound effects to play thru your monitors (I personally don't, becuase an unexpected bleep or whatever can be some pant-wetting shit at damn near full volume!)

Thanks, Huck. I'm using OS 9.2, so I don't think that would work for me at this time.
 
Maybe this works, then...

-->Control Panels

-->Sound

-->Input (select your card, make sure you check the "play sound thru output device" box)

-->Output (select your card)
