I record on my computer using Adobe Audition 1.5, the soundcard I'm using is Audiophile 2496 and my preamp is at the moment ART Tube Studio. Do I need another piece of equipment for me to be able to hear my voice through the headphones while I'm recording?

Yes. You need something to go between the Audiophile and your headphones -- a headphone amplifier. I use my computer's onboard soundcard for this purpose.

You could take the line outputs from the sound card and patch into an input of a stereo tuner (if you have one laying around) and use the headphone outs of it. How do you monitor play back in general?

Interesting...

DonF - How do you do that? I thought I had to disable the old soundcard altogether to use the audiophile?

Track Rat - I connect the output of the soundcard to speakers and monitor through headphones plugged into the speakers. OK, I'll find something to connect to the soundcard with... Will my little MD player do the job?

Thanks!

Anything with a headphone out will work. It sounds like you already have what you need. As long as the speakers mute when you plug in the headphones (so there's no ambient noise in the room from them) you're already covered unless you feel you aren't getting enough volume in them they way it is.

That may be true for some computers, but not for any of mine. If there's a resource conflict between the old soundcard and the Audiophile, it may be possible to resolve the conflict by moving one or the other to a different PCI slot. (Naturally, if the old soundcard is built into the mainboard, it can't be moved.) Anyway, I've had onboard sound peacefully coexisting with the Audiophile for quite a while now, on at least three different computers, so I know for a fact that it's possible.

i have the same question it just wont work. I need to find a way to hear vocals through headphones so the vocalist will be able to monitor what they are singing. I have audiophile 2496/dmp3 preamp(not headphone out) Warfdale monitors...the only thing that is not in use on my soundcard are the midi in/out and the S/PDIF in/out...I have no idea what the S/PIDF is for, can i monitor with this output?

update to adobe 2.0 or even better 3.0..they both let you monitor your vocals....1.5 is my fav forthe ease of use but i upgraded to 3 because of minor things like this...
