How do I get the most out of the eq on my br-8?

I'm having trouble using the eq on the br-8. All my mixes sound like mud. Has anyone else had this problem?

Are getting a good signal to the BR-8? By this I mean, are your recording levels between the 12 & 4 marks in the info screen. Do you pull your tracks down and EQ only one track at a time? You should only have to EQ a little if you have your instruments' tone set up. I'll sweep the EQ back and forth until the guitar, bass or whatever sounds the way I want.

The stereo pan makes a different too, you don't want the bass near the drum kick. I record my drum tracks in stereo and have the bass at 9:00, vocal at 12:00, rhyt guitar about 11:00, lead guitar maybe 2:00 (these are just examples).

I had a friend who was doing EQ with all the tracks playing at the same time. I showed him how I eq/mix and now he has great mixes.

What media are you listening to your mixes, i.e, speakers, headphones? This make a huge different in eq, if the speakers/headphones add too much 'color'.

I've had my br-8 for a year. I'm pretty good with getting the levels right.(around 12) researched eqing on the web. I've used it but still don't have a good grasp on it. I read about paning in Musicians guide to homerecording. they said to keep vocals in mono +kick snare and bass. But of course experimentation is what makes this so fun. I own ma-8 monitors. I think you recommended them.
I also burn my tracks to cd and make sure they're transportable. I mess with effects and keep the originaleq. Then add eq after the fact. what are some EQ settings you use on guitar?

The EQ depends on what patch and guitar I use, so I don't have a set 'EQ'. Listen this BR-8 demo at MP3.com http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/152/the_primetime_blues_band.html

This was the first song that I recorded when I got my BR-8, just over a year ago. I'll check and see if I wrote down the eq on a track sheet. Right now I'm off to do some session work for a local blues singer.

Hey 72 fender,

I too record my drum tracks in stereo....how do you pan your drum tracks ( on a clock ) ?????

I'm currently panning them at either 9:00 and 3:00, sometimes at 7:00 and 4:00......what do you think ?

Thanks.

If you use a drum machine (I have a Boss DR-5) you don't have to pan because the drums from the machine are already 'panned' in stereo when using the right and left outputs from the drum machine to the BR-8's right and left inputs.

Here I disable the effects the BR-8 tries to appy because it 'senses' an input, in other words I record the drums 'dry'. One reason is that the DR-5 has EQ and reverb added to the drum kits.

are drums panned on most drum machines

I have 2 stereo outputs on my zoom 234. I'm guessing that means they're panned too. But I manually tap the pads on it. I'm wondering if it would still be panned while manualy tapping pads. Does anyone here use the Zoom 234? just thinking aloud. This might also be a topic for another thread.

Plug some headphones in the zoom and hit the pads, you should be able to hear the drum panning.
