how do flat pannel monitors work?

just how do flat pannel monitors work?
is it two different pieces of metal, kinda like a thermostat???

and as long as we're on the subject of things i don't know
how do pzm pickups work?

i know they turn physical energy into electrical energy, but how???

They work on a grid of horizontal and vertical wires. Each wire that crosses has a coordinance that will either light up a pixel or not.
 
my bad, i meant AUDIO monitors (speakers)
but i found the answer at that sight, thankx
 
if they are made properly (and it's very expensive to do so)
they have excelent transient response and are very accurate all around
except lows, they need to be used with a sub, always
 
They work on the same principle as ribbon microphones, infact all speakers work on the same principle as microphones (except a few) in reverse, you take an electrical current and use it to move some sort of diaphragm, if you want to get into it search for planer speakers or electrostatic speakers on the web.
 
Try a Google search of "electrostatic speakers"...
 
I'll never forget my first time seeing/hearing a pair of Magneplanar's back in the 70's. Wow! I almost couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. :cool:

Yeah. I seem to remember seeing electrostatic speakers first in the 80's and at that time they were considered old technology. Can't remember who made them but I saw one set that was about 6 feet tall. 2" thick at the top and about 4" at the bottom. A buddy of mine had an ancient set of electrostatic tweeters. They were basically a grid of wires. They were open too so you could look right thru the grid. 360degree dispersion though. Kinda cool.

Actually if they were flat they would be more of a figure 8 dispersion.
