I selected lessons. I learned to sing classically by joining chorale in middle school to get out of PE. We did scales and breathing exercises daily, and really learned to "open up" by dropping our jaws as far as possible while singing. We also learned how to pronounce english words a certain way while singing, sort of like a "singing accent," similar to a british accent with overly carefully enunciated consanants, like the "t" on the ends of words. I sang harmonies for several years, and then in college too.

Rock vocals take a different approach, and I've basically tried to teach myself how to do rock vocals. So far, the changes I've made include singing more loudly, clenching my stomach muscles to produce a growl, and changing the way I pronounce words. Basically, breaking a lot of the rules I learned, but not the one on "opening up." If anything, I have to drop my jaw even further than before.

For as long as I remember I have been singing...it is the most natural thing in the world to do.
Growing up at school we sang everyday at the morning Assemblies, we sang in choirs we just sang....singing hymns was always my favourite thing we did at school.

I've taught myself how to sing, but I started the whole practicing bit when I was around 11 or 12. It was just something that was enjoyable for me to do at first, but then a couple of years ago I felt like I wanted to do more with it.

tought myself ... writing a personal song is what pushed me to continue .. slowly slowly ... one chord 2 3 4 then one thumb fingering 2 fingers after 2 years 8 years later 5 finger strumming and we see if i ever get to 5 ;)

2 years ago, I couldn't sing one pitch on key to save my life! I went through Brett Manning's Singing Success and am now going through Mastering Mix. I also did a lot of ear training. While I'm no unbelievable singer yet, I can sing well enough to play acoustic shows and record my songs without cringing! :)

I taught Myself...

When i was young, i was always close to music and singing, (even if i didn't know the lyrics)... That until 12, when i joined the Chorus of my Highschool, it was stressful, boring and didn't help me at all to produce a sound of my own, (i ended leaving & hating National Folklore music of my country) With that bad experience, I stopped singing for years, until i was 16 when i joined a Glee Club, meet awesome people, rediscovered my voice and now i know it's my passion in life... Now i'm taking lessons, and it's awesome, but i learned myself how to sing, and i rediscovered it and how relaxing and cool is thanks to the TV series Glee... That's my story.

Under the shower!
True story :D
Love it. Sing everyday in the car, everywhere I listen I just gotta go with it!

Learned in early chorus all the way up through high school select and vocal jazz - had to unlearn a lot of things for my lo-fi indie band. Vibrato rarely works in that frame.
