I selected lessons. I learned to sing classically by joining chorale in middle school to get out of PE. We did scales and breathing exercises daily, and really learned to "open up" by dropping our jaws as far as possible while singing. We also learned how to pronounce english words a certain way while singing, sort of like a "singing accent," similar to a british accent with overly carefully enunciated consanants, like the "t" on the ends of words. I sang harmonies for several years, and then in college too.
Rock vocals take a different approach, and I've basically tried to teach myself how to do rock vocals. So far, the changes I've made include singing more loudly, clenching my stomach muscles to produce a growl, and changing the way I pronounce words. Basically, breaking a lot of the rules I learned, but not the one on "opening up." If anything, I have to drop my jaw even further than before.
