How did they get the drums to sound like this?

hmmm maybe mics inside as usual, but a mic aimed at the kick a few feet away too? I got some pretty insane kick once by using re20s for room mics at around waist level. It was a really agressive sound, esp when compressed right (picked up the snare nice too), almost could have just used the room mics without anything else...(in fact I used a tiny bit of the kick mic, very small ammount of the snare and hi-passed OHs just to get the upper end of the cymbals.

You wouldn't beleive the lengths they go to get some of these sounds. :D

On a good budget, flying in 30 different drum kits to try out, a few dozen of each cymbal type, then the kind of stuff they do to mic nice sounds...


it's fun.


Of course, a badass drummer, a good tuning and a good *cough* engineer don't hurt. :D
