How can I record 8 tracks at the same time but not mix them into one track?

What are you recording into? A DAW? If so, you'll need an audio interface with
8 separate inputs. Does the mixer have an S/PDIF output?

Unless that mixer has a USB or firewire connection then I don't think you'd be able to. Other than buying a large mixer with USB or firewire connectivity, you would need to get an audio interface with 8 analogue inputs such as the Lexicon U82S.

Also, does that mixer have direct outs for each channel? Didnt look like it from the picture I just googled unless there is something on the back of the unit. You could conceivably use the inserts from each mic channel to get a signal into a soundcard.

The Delta1010lt would be the cheap end for a desktop, for a laptop you'll need a usb or firewire interface. Those start around $400 for something decent and go up from there...

the vast majority of usb and firewire interfaces have preamps built in- ala the "Firepod" or "Firestudio" from presonus. Most of the big brands (MAudio, MOTU, Tascam, etc) have their own version, but almost all of them have pres built in, which means you really don't need the mixer for recording.

Yes this is true you don't need the mixer for recording, but it is very useful if you have the 8 channels of d/a conversion to route to the mixer giving you monitoring at your fingertips. Not to mention make sub mixes from the daw at mix down.

Srsly, I'd do a bit of homework on that first- look for reviews. I've seen it pop up as a suggestion around here and its usually in the Guitar Center catalog... but I couldn't tell you why its so much cheaper. Check the specks against the Presonus FireStudio or the Motu 8Pre. I've never heard anyhting bad about it, but I still wonder why.
