How can i make my guitar tracks sound like powerfull distortion with a cd quality???
when i mean powerful distortion i talk about band, like Deftones, KoRn, Linkin Park

or mid powerfull distorition like Incubus, Blink182,puddle of mud etc...

i have :
Souncd blaster audigy platinium
Cubase
Cool edit
POD 2.0
2 Sm57
Gibson Les Paul Studio
Ibanez 7 string
etc...

which process can i follow ? ( compression, layering, effect ? )
I want to record a demo of my band which sound like all those band

from my experiences, run it through a good head perhaps a marshall or something
and then try micing it , or running direct from the marshall..
u might also want to layer it twice

the punchiness and clarity of the distrotion is all in the way you mic your amp, if you do mic your amp?

If you do, try an sm57 on the edge of the speaker's cone for bass and an sm57 right in the middle for clarity and high end, record to stereo. For light to heavey distortion, mix in the edge sm57 and middle sm57 until you get what you want, more of the edge more punch, more of the middle more clarity, then bounce those two tracks to mono so the sound is even, then pan that left. Record the same part again, mix to mono, and pan right.

This technique works especially well for heavier and powerful distortions when you want to clear the middle of the mix for vocals and bass instruments. Also when a guitar solo comes in, record that on a third track and put it in the middle, assuming you have the tracks!

see thread below, "my guitar distortion sounds like shite"

I tried to answer with an example also.

how come when i tried to mic an amp i get ear bleeding feedback?

well when i mic an amp like i just decribed, the guitarist is in another room than the actual speaker cabinet, unless he wants feedback for effect. I would imagine that a "cranked" amp in a room with the guitarist 3 feet from the amp, the room is about 10'x12', would get feedback. But you describe it as ear bleeding, which is not the usual feedback from a distorted amp, so my guess would be a feedback loop somewhere in your signal path, which i understand can sound pretty horrible, or something to do with microphonics, this is a subject i am lackign in, i just know that they are generally bad, I've heard they make high pitched squealing noises, w/e "they" are.
Maybe somebody else can help their in either explaining what they are, or explaining that they have nothing to do with this and that i have lost my speaking, or posting, privaleges indefinitely. :)
