i agree with the basic going on of this thread.

NP is a killer drummer. but like RAMI mentioned, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa etc really win my attention!

Rush is OK, not my favorite, but i like some of there songs. i think Tom Sawyer is a really cool song. other than that, i really dont listen to rush all that much.

Dreamtheater drummer. he's good, but the band plays some kinda boring music.. its cool at first, but then i want to fall asleep...

again, sure, hes a great drummer.

Well, I'm not exactly keen on Rush.
Why? because Neil Peart always seemed to play like a drum machine. There was never any swagger in his playing.....the very Reason I started playing drums was John Bonham.


Just for the hell of it, I'd like to see Peart tackle "Living Loving Maid".

I'm not sure he could do it. I mean, his timing was always so on the beat, that I'm not sure if he can really lay back behind it in the pocket.


Aside from that. I Hate Geddy Lee's voice. it just always annoyed the hell out of me.

Rush had a few songs that I really liked, like "Vital Signs" and "Witch Hunt". (I hate "Tom Sawyer" and "Red Barchetta", though.)


Now granted, he had some killer tom licks, and rolls, and "Xanadu" is freaking awesome...but for the most part, I just never was a Rush fan.

And to be honest, I preferred the stuff he was doing after he studied with Freddie Gruber - at that point, he began to develop a groove to his playing - but most of the people who are long time Rush fans didn't like stuff like "Dog Years".

His timing is always right on top of the beat because he is always playing to a click. I have seen him play 3 times and he is always wearing a click. He probably has to because they are triggering stuff since they are just a three piece. He is obviously a great player because he has found admirers everywhere. Personally, I am so freaking disgusted about progressive rock because so much of it is just gay. I don't like Yes for the same reason. Bad singers screeching about shit that I can't relate to over a time signature that changes about every 10 seconds. All with no groove. All that shit does is sell T-Shirst to neophytes as far as I am concerned. On the other hand there are other complex drummers that I love like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, guys like that.

Part of the problem for me is that progressive rock never really progressed much farther than a noodlefest. It just did not go the extra mile for me the way other genres did. Now when I see a rock band I want them to just do what works and ROCK (duh) and leave the heavy stuff to musicians that have really given themselves to the dificulty that comes with producing that kind of music.

I think his point is that his name is Mike Portnoy, not Portray.

I've got nothing against rush, and obviously Neil Peart is a more amazing drummer than I could be in a hundred years, but I don't really like his drumming... Everybody looks to him as some kind of God and I don't really get it. Sure, he's an incredible player, but I'd rather listen to a drummer who can change the feel of a song, a drummer is there to make the band sound better - Mickey Curry is a good example of that IMO.

Back when I was playing clubs I ran into a guy who always used to say NP was "the patron saint of basement drummers". Now that I think about it, a lot of the drummers I've run into who are always working, don't list NP in their top 5. Results may vary depending on where in the world you are - just my observation.

Meh Rush isn't my thing,

But I also think that Neil Pert only second to Travis Barker is perhaps one of the most over rated drummers of all time.

Don't get me wrong him and Barker are bloody amazing drummers and if I had 1/4 of the skill they do I would be over the moon. But there are better drummers.

Those two would be in my "Top 20 Drummers" list though.

If you really want to get a feel for NP's abilities, listen to the Exit Stage Left album. All live performances. For the most part, I think he has to be unconscious while playing....how could a normal human be able to do all that stuff while in their right mind. No doubt about it, Peart, Lee & Lifeson are three of the tops in their respective positions. I think they must have made a deal with the devil, cause how could three people with that much talent end up in the same band.

He is a great drummer but Rush's music ain't for everyone. I kow people who think its cheesy power metal and that Geddy Lee sings too much like a girl. Whatever. All drummers should respect him because hes amazing but Rush aint for everyone. I respect Eddie Van Halen but can't listen to a lot of VH songs.
