Hiya guys whenever my monitors are on there is a horrible tone that comes out from them, this is making mixing near impossible
my set up:
pro tools 8LE with M box mini and ESI Near 05 Active Monitors

the noise still occours even when the level of monitors is turned down
im thinking that it may be the cables i am using as they are not the best quality

any ideas would be great
thanks for your time

have you tried running them plugged in somewhere else?

Does your monitors require balanced cables and is that what your using?

Not enough information. Can you describe the noise? Is there anything you do that you notice makes it worse or better? Do you get the same noise when you monitor through headphones?

i havent tried plugging them in anywhere else no, not too sure what cables i need, i have jack to jack stero cables so thinking they are unbalanced but not too sure. the noise is a constant tone, like a sine wave noise, very high pitched

you'll have to try and isolate it to see where its coming from...try plugging them in elsewhere, try different cables, try plugging something else into them etc etc

I have KRK rokkits and they have a constant low level hum....but its not bad enough to bother me so i live with it, Im sure a power conditioner would sort it out

Is your Computer a tower or laptop.

My laptop power supply mungs up all my audio outs. But as soon as i disconnect my power pack from the laptop everything sounds as smooth as butter.

I would say it is a power thing somewheres. Try moving some of your external hardare too while the noise is going. Chances are once you start moving stuff around that wretched noise may change when the culprit moves around or whatever it is responding to moves.

Weird fact....

When my power supply is plugged in and i am playign guitar the ugly noise raises and lowers intensifies and subsides when i move my picking hand closer to the pic ups and away from them and when i raise my feet off the floor.....

Fun with science. can ya dig it.

Most everyone here will tell you to never lift the ground but I do with my laptop or I get the same terrible noise.

have tried some experementing and have found,
the monitors dont make te noise when they are used with another audio device (plugged into my phone)
the noise starts when pro tools starts and isn't there when just the compter is on
it isnt the cables as it makes the same noise when using another cables,
this hasnt helped me understand it any better, hopefully someone can help me
thanks in advance

so its not the monitors its pro tools...check what driver protools is set up with under audio devices, maybe try a clean install, change buffers, make sure drivers are latest versions etc etc

been trying to play about with this. the noise stops when i go into the (maybe playback engine) settings, the menu where you select how much CPU pro tools can use. when on this menu the noise stops then once you click ok it comes back. i have tried all the different settings in this menu but no luck

sorry. no the noise doesn't change when i move my mouse. or rub my tummy or stick my toung out lol

LOL, just wanted to see if it was a conflict with your USB buss and the sound hardware, you may want to see if an IRQ is being shared with something like your graphics hardware or your mouse (hence the question) . If that doesnt help, try spitting at the moon :o)
