Well A friend Ask me to record his band at their practice space, his band is about 8 pieces and they play Christian pop/rock.

I own a Digi002, and of course i dont have anough tracks to record the whole band at the same time, so i decided that i will be using their mixer. its a 28 channel yamaha... that all i know, my plans are to send all mics trough the mixer and then to my 002...
but my question is... what is the best way, which output should i use from the mixer, and where to my 002.
i have been recording for a few months but only track by track, never a live band so i have no idea.
any other advices will be well received

thanks!

without knowing the exact model of the mixer...it's hard to say

you'll need to first look for tape or direct outs on the mixer. This will allow you pass right from the mic channel straight to tape. If you don't have that...I'd try to see how many sub outs there might be available. If there's not enough, you can try using the inserts on each channel to patch out

of course with your 002, you're only limited to 8 analog channels. You'll need an A/D converter if you're going to go above that.

im pretty sure there is a tape out or something similar on the mixer.

let say i have a tape out on the mixer, do i send all the track to one input on my 002?

Use the monitor/ effect/ Aux sends as your outs. For example: Digi 002 has 4 preamps and 4 analog inputs so if you were to record drums, mic the kick, snare and overheads with the Digi 002 preamps then use your mixer for the toms.

Let's say you have 3 toms, mic all three. Then if channel 1 on the mixer is your rack tom, then turn your monitor or aux send #1 knob up for channel 1 and then use that monitor/aux output on your mixer to input 5 on the Digi 002. If your floor tom is on channel 2, then do the same thing but turn aux/ monitor send knob #2 up on the board and use the corresponding output on the board to send it to the Digi 002 input 6. Just remember that every channel on the mixer that has the aux/ monitor send #1 knob turned up means that whatever signal is coming through that channel is gonna come out of the aux/monitor #1. Another Example: If you want to save tracks and put both rack toms on the same track, you can assign them both to the same monitor/aux send. Just be aware of that. So, if you're going to make a vocal scratch track, make sure the aux/monitor send #1 knob is all the way down on the vocal channel on the mixer or you'll have vocals on your rack tom track! It works pretty good.
