hooking up a headphone amp

simple question: I just picked up a headphone amp and was wondering if I should use the headphone output of my Layla 3G at a low volume or split the line outs on the back 1/2 that also go to the monitors?

I guess either would work but I am curious as to what others are doing...thanks!
