DaveO brought up a good point that I'd like to address.
I know I said that I'd never get involved with another comp cd project...I lied. Unless somebody is totally against it, I will do another one with the following major DIFFERENCE: NO THREE YEAR FRIGGING WAIT.
The reason I want to do this is that I already know how to do it. I also know exactly what not to do. When I break down the last couple years into specific events, the only thing that held this project up was me not knowing what to do. I think that once people get their HomeRecording.Comp Volume One discs in the mail, they'll be very pleased with the decent albeit amature job that I've done.
Now one of the big things that tripped us up initially last time was trying to get everybody to agree on things...when most people really didn't care or would just say "sure, sounds good." Therefore, I have come up with the following plan. I am open to suggestions, but I feel 100% confident that this plan will be successful.
1) Submissions will be a single package deal with a single deadline. You miss the deadline, you miss the CD, and you wait for the next one. Last time I worked with a lot of people so that they could get their stuff on the CD late...mainly because it was the first time we'd done this and I didn't want anyone to be left out, ya know?
1.a) Submissions will include:
a) A single song recorded by the submitter, on a single CDR *data* disc. No audio CDs.
b) A signed contract (to be downloaded) giving dup and dist license to the entire group of submitters. If the material you recorded is not your own, you must download and submit a co-creator contract in which the copyright owners agree to allow you to submit the song. No cover songs under any circumstances.
c) A piece of paper with the following information: Recorded By (no recorded "at"), Performed By, Written By, copyright date, copyright name, Engineer's email and website, Performer's email and website.
d) A piece of paper with the following information: Subitter's name, BBS Name, mailing address, email address, and telephone number.
e) A USD money order for $20 even.
f) And understanding that the CD might be sold for more or less than $20 to the general public, depending on the number of CD's required.
1.b) Submissions will be received by me, complete, by a set date.
1.c) The minimum requirements for a submitter will be that he of course be a member of the BBS, have recorded the material, and have at *least* 50 posts over the past 6 months. We can sit around and bitch over this one but trust me, lots of people pop up out of NOWHERE wanting to be on the CD, and that's not kosher. If you can't post 8-10 posts a month, you don't need to be on the comp.
2) No mastering will be done or considered. A song list will be generated by myself or Ed in whatever manner seems to fit best.
3) I will design the CD labels, because I know exactly what I can get away with now. CD Duplication and printing will be through the same guy in Portland who did the current CD.
4) I will do all the artwork unless somebody pops in with a *specific* idea. Last time I had a lot of "yeah, I'll help" and then tick....tick....tick.....tick.....nothing. I won't worry about making sure it all looks good to everybody because what everybody seems to really want is to just GET the damn thing in a reasonable amount of time.
5) A thread will be started for cover submissions. I think it was really cool the way we did this last time, even if S8-N & Todd were the only ones to submit anything.
6) After the submission deadline a call for pre-orders from the rest of the masses will be made. I will require a specific date range for the preorder money to arrive. Thus, after the submission wait (perhaps 2 months), there will be another wait for pre-orders (perhaps 2 months). The purpose of this is to raise extra money for the duplication and initial shipping (right now I'm paying initial shipping out of pocket because I did this wrong).
7) Printing of jackets and liners will begin as soon as the artwork is all ready. I can do this myself again, but if anybody is willing to help I'll take it. I'll require specific prints on specific paper from a specific series of printer. You will be reimbursed for ink & paper.
8) These will not be enhanced CD's. We may include other media, but I will not create any sort of interface.
The total turnaround time from announcement of submission deadline to a shipping product should be less than 6-8 months.
I can do this, if you want me to. The announcement of a submission date can be as soon as next month, with a date of sometime in August or September...thereby delivery by christmas.
I'll leave this thread open for comments...including negatives and criticisms and threats.
