I'm planning on buying a house...3BR. But it's the garage I'm concerned with. I want to build a home studio in my soon-to-be garage. I have all the recording equipment I need (DAW and separate), but I need to know how to maximize my space as cheaply as possible. Are internal walls the only way to go? What should I consider in converting my space? Not new to home studios, but new to converting a garage.

With a space like that, I don't think I'd divide it up but would go with one large treated room. Now I have my basement studio split up (a seperate contol room and a tracking room) but I did it years ago and had no guidance at the time. It works well for me but if I had to do it again...

Like Track Rat says above, I'd probably just go with one room rather than splitting it up. You'll need a fair amount of treatment all around, but I wouldn't waste time and money on a control room and tracking room. If anything I'd say build a vocal booth assuming you'll be wanting to record vocals. You could then use that to help break the square walls of a standard garage.

What is the current construction of the garage, this is what is going to determine what sound proofing (not treatment) is required.

Don't listen to any advice about vocal booths, it has been discussed to death and unless you vocal booth is the size of a small bedroom forget it. If you are only recording yourself, go down the one room option and keep the room as big as possible, you also have not said how big the garage is? 1 car, 2 car bigger?

Cheers
Alan.
