Thought I'd just pop in and say Hi! I've been playing guitar for (off and on) about 20 years and it's about time I started recording!

Have purchased Home Studio XL, PC is a bit ropey but should be okay for starters. Running an Audiophile sound card....midi/recording all completely new to me so wish me luck!

You might want to look into getting an audio interface ( = soundcard) better suited for recording - you'll be heckled a bit until you do ;)

Whats wrong with an audiophile sound card? I thought those were M-audio :confused:

Thanks folks - the card I have is audiophile 2496.

Is there anything else I'm missing from my list?
 
Oops! Thinking Soundblaster "Audigy" - just about every new poster has one, so that's where my mind went ;)
 
I have an M-Audio audiophile 2496 and I am quite happy with the sound I get from it.

You will also need some way to get your guitar into the computer. The audiophile has only line level or digital inputs. You can't just plug a guitar in there.

If we are talking acoustic guitar, your best bet is to get a microphone and either a dedicated pre-amp or a small mixer. Your signal chain is micro-phone-->preamp/mixer-->soundcard.

For electric guitar, you could use the mic again to mic up an amplifier, or go direct through a DI box or a mixer. I recommend the former option. If you chose the latter, you will want some sort of softare amplifier emulation to actually make it sound like an electric guitar. Alternatively, you could use a dedicated guitar audio interface like the ones from Line 6.

You also need to be able to listen to what you record. The audiophile has stereo line outs. You could run those to monitors or headphones directly if you really wanted to. I run my output to a small mixer, which can then send the signal to my monitors or to headphones if I am recording simultaneously.
