OK, that's it....

I have never seen a subject so broadly debated. Every aspect of this thread has been talked about before at least 3 times since I'm here, and it's only been 1 month or two. The problem is that the same thing is repreated over and over again. It would be ok if in every new thread on this same subject there would be something new, like....

whatever!

P.S. - it seems that the microphone forum is becoming a kind of soap opera, and whenever you tune in the same thing happens. If you've seen the beggining and the end you've got it all. Of course, there are some exceptions (like Harvey humongous course), but in general it applies.

Search for a thread on the "Marshall V67G at Mars". As Rthodox has pointed out, the whole discussion has already been done, down to the shockmount issue (I can't recall the answer, tho...)

If you look REALLY hard, you might find the thread where I posted pics of exactly what you get with a C1.

The V67 sold at Mars is a stripped down V67G. No mount and case. Yes, you save a few dollars, but the difference is not that much after you buy the rest, and then the C1 still has the added pad and hi pass, so the V67 is a good mic, so you will just have to determine what is better for you.

Mr Hyatt, Perhaps it under the principal of moving the mic in a large volume...you gotta admit that for the cash $150.00 it is a pretty good mic...At your price point $200.00 ..a $50.00 difference is fairly large..This is the market that frets over pennies...So all things being "equal"{subjective} ..I would think they are what they consider the magic number to move this mic ..And with the fact that they distridute thru "superstores"..Where the "average"budget mic sits at about $299.00...It looks like a pretty solid plan to me..IMHO

Its all about numbers (or should I say units) but the problems there is at what point do you forsake any type of quality assurance to move your product to the market. No granted their mic could be a real winner in terms of quality and, as you would say "price point", but what happens there is that bulk (or quantity) becomes the focal point of the campaign. Speaking from experience, a thousand dollars today goes a lot further thena thousands dollars 10-15 years ago. Inside of that is competition that forces every player to sell below what they think the market should fetch...there in lies the situation you have today...dropping market prices to either hold on, or to gain more of that market.

I hear what you are saying. I just think that by the time you add on the rest of the stuff, like a mount and good case, you are much closer than you think. Then there is the added features of the C1.

I do understand the private label issue. MARS gets this model V67M exclusively, so no other store can sell it, and we are not in MARS, nor for that fact any chain store. It is much harder for us to compete when we are only in 42 stores nationwide, especially when you consider MARS, GC, and Sam Ash all carry Marshall, so that is almost 200 stores.

You also have to remember, our body is a dual cast alloy, not spun brass. Our body has to be poured into a mold, left to harden, then smoothed and polished. After that, the body has to be engraved. Engraving is not cheap, but it looks much better.

Marshall has the luxury of spinning the bodies on a lathe. You can do thousands of them in one day. They also just stencil on the name...I think. It takes us way more time to build our bodies, but I think we accept this because our body is part of what makes the C1 sound so good. Yes they are close, but I still think we win, and I am sure they think they win.

I know I pay more to build my mic than a V67G, and its not about the quantity, because I think I am already buying more from 797 than Marshall is, but I also know I pay more, but I do so for a reason, I do not skimp on anything.

If GC, MARS, and Sam Ash want to come on board...fine, but to do so, I have to give up a lot of profit dollars because you have to sell so far off the mark just to do business with them, and that it is a risky situation.

The V67 is a good mic, and at $150.00 it is a good deal, but then the mount is what...$25.00 to $30.00, and the road case..how much is that? So, we are closer than it appears, and I believe you get what you pay for. :D

I know how you feel about puffery.I can't say the C1 is "the" mic,or the "right"mic.But it seems right for me today to get it.And it sure is a hell of a lot easier for my budget to assemble a locker of $200 mics than Neumanns et al.I just might add that Marshall V67G down the road!I know your ears are tested and reliable ,so I'll be sure to give that mic a listen.If you happen to have any clips posted on the Marshall,I'd appreciate a link.

I was interested in your comment that you can get better service with the C1 than the v67...have you heard any instances where Marshall gave someone less than great service on a problem?.....
 
Shockmount for V67M

At Mars, do a search for the MXL-57, and you'll see that the shockmount sells for $49.95.

In answer to the question of what to do when you don't have a shockmount, I recently purchased a $25 delivered price shockmount from (who else?):

I suspect it's one or two guys who ship them out after work.

Here's my two-bit review:

The collar is so thick that you could tighten the bungee cords enough to hold a 4-cylinder engine block upside down in it if you needed to -- that's the good news.

The bad news is that all that structural plastic MIGHT interact sonically with your mic, depending on what it is. With my AT 4060, it looks funny, and I suspect it influences the sound, although that is pure speculation on my part.

But it should work great with any of the pencil mics, since the capsule will be far from the fat ring of plastic.

Best to stick with the *correct* shockmount if you can.

Thanks, I guess that was my point. Total cost for a V67M at MARS with a mount... $200.00. An extra $29.00 gets the C1 with everything, mic, with pad and hi-pass, mount, case, and foam filter.

Food for thought :D

I have a freind who bought a V67 at Mars and they gave him the shock mount for 10.00.. so it was 149.00 + 10.00 ..I guess he lucked out..I have a V67 that Ive used a couple of times and the lack of a shock has never been a problem..Its a fairly quiet enviorment..It fits in my AT shock no need though..Allan,Roadcase I thought thats what the card board box was for ...LOL.. Seriously Im sure you make a quality product..Im more interested in the pre that the mics.Good luck and much sucess!

I hope I didn't say SP has better service than Marshall. If I did, I'm sorry, because I have not heard anything (good or bad) about Marshall's service. SP has proven good and fast service.
